Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
06 Feb 2012, 05:02
Hello,
I am looking for a profile evaluation.
Personal I am a 28 year old Indian male. I completed my Bachelors degree in Engineering from England with a 1st class honours (which roughly translates to a 3.8 GPA).
Work Experience I continued to live in England and joined a start-up IT consultancy, where I worked for 5 years. The company has grown every year since its start-up and I have been a part of some very good projects that show leadership, business acumen, problem solving and project management.
After that, I wanted to move away from IT and get some experience in general business management. I returned to India in 2010 and for 6 months, I worked to help in the start-up of a mental health charitable organisation. Currently, I am working in Sierra Leone, Africa as a volunteer (Business Advisor) with an agency called RADA (Rehabilitation and Development Agency) which is working towards securing livelihoods for individuals and communities affected by civil war.
The reasons for working in the development sector have been more from a career change standpoint than philanthropy. I was interested in General Business Management and found more opportunities to learn that by volunteering. Now, I feel that its the right time to pursue an MBA. I have taken the GMAT once and scored 630 (45Q, 31V). This was done before I enrolled in any prep courses. Since then, I have completed a MGMAT course and am confident that I can raise the score to 680-700.
Target Schools I am still working on the list of target schools but here is what I have so far:
INSEAD (France) ISB (India) Dartmouth (Tuck)
I know that my score is well below their median GMAT. The dilemma I face is that I will be in Sierra Leone till the end of this year and will not be able to take the GMAT before 2013 as there is no test centre here and travelling to another country will be very expensive. Given my age and profile, do you think I have a chance with a score of 630 or should I wait and apply in 2014 with a better GMAT score
Thanks
Sunil

I am not as familiar with ISB admissions, but you run the risk of becoming "white noise" in the INSEAD and Tuck pool since you will be evaluated alongside a very large group of Indian applicants. Where I think you have an edge is in your international exposure and your story is compelling if told in the right way. For example, I like your honesty that you were not necessarily looking for a philanthropic opportunity, but rather general business experience. If you also bolt on a brief bit about what you learned about being philanthropic anyway, it could make for good reading. To answer your question directly, I guess I would focus on packaging your strengths in the best possible way to stand out in the crowd and then apply, with the plan B to try again next year but with a better GMAT. Reapplicants must demonstrate some substantial change in their profile to be a viable candidate, and if you added 100 points on your GMAT it could be the ticket for a reapplicant. So I guess what I am saying is that your risk is low in applying with the 630, since you'd essentially have the same chances next year as a reapplicant that you would if you postponed it until then and posted a higher score. Make sense?

Hi Bryant,
Thank you for your reply, it was a very sound assessment.
It makes sense and I will focus on the points that you have mentioned.

Hi Bryant,
I took the GMAT yesterday and scored 690 (Q49, V35). I am happy with the improvement but a little sad that I missed out on 700.
I had applied to MIT and Tuck with my old score and as expected, I did not make it through. They are very competitive schools even with a good GMAT score. But going through the the application process was a useful experience.
I just have a small query: Given my profile, do I need to take the GMAT again to try and raise the score to 710-720? Also, would like to know your opinion on IR. Would the schools be able to use it to make decisions given its still a new section?
Thanks
Sunil
