Profile Evaluation [#permalink] New post 24 Jul 2012, 11:00
Hi,

Kindly evaluate my profile.

Background information:

Nationality: Indian

Undergrad - UPTU University ( 74% ). (No system of GPA evaluation in my university)
Major : in Computer Science and Technology

GMAT : 1st attempt : 680 (Q49 V33)
2nd attempt : 660 (Q49, V31) (seriously considering a retake but worried after dismal show in latest attempt. With my practice test scores in latest GMAT
had expected a 700+ score. Any suggesttions ??)

Work Experience - (3 years - Information Technology in Service Industry - Domain: Healthcare and Insurance.)
(Client: An eminent top 20 US healthcare insurance industry)

Major Responsibilities / Achievements:

2010 - May'2012
1) Requirement elicitation and code enhancement / restructuring based on requirements (software code).
2) Mentoring of new joiners in project team (have mentored 5 new recruits successfully)
3) Defect Prevention coordinator: ensure each deliverable to client is thoroughly reviewed and brainstorm and suggest solutions of defects already injected
4) Configuration Controller: Ensure that the ISO CMM Level 5 practices and processes are followed within project
5) Party / Event coordinator: Initiate and coordinate team building activities and project parties (had a very successful stint in it. Organized an organization wide
event and few other project level events on very large scale. Grew in popularity of leadership skills and team-bonding initiative activities)
6) Got account level award for two consecutive years for technical and domain knowledge excellence and dedication to work
7) Worked on two different projects which helped in dollar saving of approximately USD $80K.
8) Worked either alone / as mentor on few very big and complex US Healthcare projects since 2010.

June 2012 - till present
Shifted to Business Analyst profile and working on requirement elicitation and requirement framing for a big US Auto Insurance firm.

Extra Curricular -
- An active member in organizing events in employer organization (as stated above, already have organized few big events, mostly single handed)
- A volunteer at SPARK, an IT organization initiative to spread literacy and basic knowledge about various sciences among rural children. Have been sent as a teacher on one such missions
- Member of Toastmasters Club, a worldwide renowned club in communication and leadership development.
- Member of college IT Club (E-Xtreme) and National Engineers Organization (NEO) during graduation
- Initiated, coordinated and participated in college and school functions. An active member in such activities.
- Love playing badminton, cricket and Table Tennis. Was a member of Badminton team that won third spot in inter-IT Badminton tournament.

I'm looking forward to work on my profile, especially in extra-curricular domain, where I could show some more examples of leadership skills. Any suggestions are most welcome.

I was initially targeting top 25 B-Schools but the dream got shattered with dismal show at GMAT (that even sank in 2nd attempt). Had sent application to following schools through GMAT exam:
Kenan Flagger , Indian School of Business (ISB), National University of Singapore (NUS), Marshall and York Schulich.
Also considering sending applications to Georgetown (McDonough), Carnie Mellon, Kellogg, Emory, Duke and Kelley.

Kindly help me have a reality check as I'm almost naive about these B-schools. Let me know if I stand any chance of landing in any of above schools. Also, any suggestions for any other B-School will be appreciative. Not sure whether I should again go for GMAT as I may end up missing R1 deadline for few. Also, need some time for application process and TOEFL.

P.S.: I'm planning to work either in Consulting / Finance post MBA.

Thanks in advance.

The key question for you is whether you should retake the GMAT or not. Your quant is fine. You need to focus on the verbal. If you think something went wrong that you can fix next time around, I encourage you to retake. If you think you did the best you can both in terms of test prep and performance on test day, then I'm not sure. You can either give it one more try, which is important given that you want to go into consulting or finance, or you can accept your 680 and apply based on that, but realize that the top management consulting firms and investment banks use the GMAT as a screening tool, and at least some of them want to see 700+.

For more on this topic, please see:

If you decide not to retake, then of the schools you list below, consider UNC, Emory, Georgetown, Kelley, NUS, and York are realistic, but also realize that you need to focus your MBA goals. Finance or consulting is much too broad, and you may need to adjust them.

Best,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your opinion.

I mentioned Consulting and Finance as my preferred post-MBA streams as I ain't sure which profile suits better for an Indian IT guy in International market. These two streams (consulting and finance) cropped up after discussing with few of my colleagues who are also pursuing MBA from B-schools.

I may be ready to change my stream based on the B-school curriculum and the best courses offers in it. But as stated by you, the key question is whether should I retake GMAT. I'm in two minds regarding that, reason being, first - I've almost exhausted all my prep material; second - I was doing reasonably well in mock tests but somehow got blanked from 1st question in Verbal during second attempt at GMAT (which I considered as my best shot at GMAT). Also, my verbal scores have usually ranged from 33 - 35 and quants from 49 - 50. So, even taking maximum of both, i.e Q50, V35/36, would i be able to get a reasonable good GMAT score which would justify the 3d attempt.

Your comments are most welcome :)

I think you're focusing too much on your label and not enough on where you want to end up professionally. Please see "Response to 'Shortlisting MBA Programs."

Yes your goals may change in business school as you learn and grow, but you need some direction before you start. Otherwise you might as well throw darts at a dartboard in terms of choosing programs. Please see "Why MBA?" You also need more specific career direction so that when you start business school you will be ready for the internship recruiting that begins very quickly.

Regarding the GMAT I see , but if you could maintain your quant and increase your verbal those 1-2 points that will help you at the programs that feed into the top investment banks and management consulting firms as well as when applying to jobs at those firms. On the other hand, you don't have to go that route. You can work in corporate finance or you can work at smaller consulting firms and graduate from still excellent but slightly lower ranked programs. If it's important to pursue the first option, then retake, perhaps trying a different prep approach. If you are happy with the results and the opportunities open to you with those results, then don't' retake.

Best,
Linda
