Profile evaluation [#permalink] New post 16 Aug 2012, 10:58
Hi,

Can you please evaluate my profile (given below) with respect to my shortlisted schools.

GRE:1170

Undergrad: First class, Bachelor of Engineering from India.

Prof experience (10+ years of FT till date):
- 8+ years with software products industry leader as Technical consultant (Basically my job profile involves helping customers to map their business requirement to technical requirements,I am based out of NY.) Clients have been Pfizer and Morgan Stanley.
- Prior to this, 2 years with Indian MNC as software engineer

Community service: I have been involved in lot of community service initiatives for past 3 years (Volunteering and fundraising both in CT and NJ) - HIV awareness, Empowering underprivileged children : helping them complete their education and guiding them on vocational training options.

Post MBA goals: Product Management, Product Strategy in IT.

Target Schools: Wharton, Sloan, Kellogs, Columbia, Booth and Yale.

Can you please advise me whether I have selected the right schools. What are my chances of getting into my shortlisted schools?

Thanks!

Hi geekyindian,

Thanks for your message. I am happy to provide this feedback on your profile.

How did you do on the Verbal and Quant sections of your GRE? That will be important to be able to fully assess your profile. Depending on your math/verbal split, I may want you to retake the GRE to be competitive at more of the schools that you mentioned.

Also, what university did you go to in India? The AdComs at the top business schools know the specific universities in India, and a First Class degree from a leading Indian university will make you an even stronger candidate.

There are two potential weaknesses in your profile. First, it is important to note that 10 years of work experience puts you on the older end of successful applicants. While you could still get admitted to a top MBA program, you should definitely apply this year as this is almost certainly your last legitimate chance to apply (I usually prefer that professionals apply with a maximum of 6-7 years of work experience). If you are not admitted to one of your top schools this year, you may consider waiting a couple years and then doing an executive MBA instead.

It will also be important to strive to distinguish yourself from other Indian male software engineers through your personal experiences, unique community service experience, etc.

Given the importance of overcoming the challenge of being an older applicant and of distinguishing yourself from a very competitive applicant pool of Indian software engineers, you would likely significantly benefit from working with the admissions experts at Stratus Prep. If you might be interested in collaborating with Stratus Prep on your MBA application, please feel free to email me at shawn.oconnor@stratusprep.com to set up time for a free consultation about how Stratus Prep can help you.

Best,
Shawn
