Hi,

Please help me understand if i have a realistic chance of making it to a Top 5 US school(with scholarship of around 30-40%) or a Top 20 Global school with my profile. My experience is on the higher side and I am also concerned about fit in some of these programs.

GMAT - 740 Q-48 V-42 IR-7 AWA-4.

I am quite disapointed with AWA 4 since I am usually a good writer but that's what i have for now and I understand that retaking for AWA is not a good use of my time. If an AWA of 5.5 can help my application then I can go ahead and retake but i have read that 4 and above is ok.

Education - BTech - 71.32% Kerala University Computer Science.
CBSE 10- 85% CBSE - 12 - 87%

Work Ex - 8 years of IT experience. Team lead for a 10 member team working on a Niche technology called WCS. All experience is in infosys. Current responsibilities include team utilization, performance management for the team, reporting to the client and higher management and ownership of key deliverables. Technical guidance/direction is given to the team on a need basis and I also get involved in complex technical issues which have a direct impact on the site sales.

International Work Ex - I was in New york for 3 years(2007-2010) working on a trade processing application for a Top US bank in their office . Recent short trips to US for KT related activities/connecting with clients etc.

EC - Part of a spiritual organization as a volunteer. Involved in Organizing exhibitions/fund raising etc for this organization.

Thanks,
Vishnu

Hi Vishnu,

I'd say a top 5 program is going to be tough, but that a top 20 is possible. You have a very strong academic record and GMAT score (I agree that you should not spend time retaking the GMAT for the AWA). Unfortunately, your professional experience is very technical, which means that you fall into the overrepresented category of "Indian Male Engineer." I recognize that you've risen to leadership/management role within the technical sphere at Infosys, but I think think it makes it a little tougher. Definitely focus on your high level client interactions, team management, and other leadership roles (versus your technical role).

Furthermore, your community activities are limited/ad-hoc, and I don't see anything in the way of extracurricular activities.

I think you would be a strong candidate for part time programs, especially given that you have 8 years experience under your belt. Have you considered part time programs? If there's a possibility of getting a transfer with Infosys, perhaps you could relocate and apply to part time programs such as UCLA and UC Berkeley. If you're only interested in full time programs, I think you can definitely try for top 20 schools, but I'd strongly advise that you add some safer schools to your list.

As for scholarships, that is difficult to answer. Many programs have merit scholarships, but you'll have to research each program's scholarship programs to see if you'd qualify or be competitive.

Good luck,
Mili
