Profile Evaluation [#permalink] New post 17 Oct 2013, 23:01
Hello,

Please let me know your thoughts on my profile and my targeted schools:

GMAT: 710 (Q48, V40)
CGPA: 6.6/10 - Anna University, Chennai - B.Tech(Information Technology)

WE: 37 months (Jun 2010 - Aug 2013)
1. KPMG Advisory Services Pvt. Ltd. (Jun 2012 - Aug 2013)
-Analyst in the IT department, specializing in SAP.
-Client-facing, multiple stints at client locations (within India mostly, 1 month in Nigeria)

2. Accenture Services Pvt. Ltd (Jun 2010 - May 2012)
-Started as Associate Software Engineer. Promoted to Software Engineer in a year with the highest internal rating (the top 5 percent) in my peer group
-Worked primarily in software development, heavily involved in client interfacing in order to gather requirements and such. Client was based in UK.

Extra:
Worked in the Chennai chapter of Aisec for a year.
Fitness Enthusiast - marathon runner, Crossfit etc.
Amateur writer of fiction.
ABRSM Piano - Grade 4

I would like to switch from pure technology to a marketing role. I want to use this experience to end up utilizing both my knowledge of technology and marketing as a Product Manager.

Schools I am targeting are:
1. ISB
2. NUS
3. Nanyang
4. UNC Kenan-Flagler
5. Kellogg
6. Olin (Babson)
7. Michigan (Ross)
8. Oxford (Said)
9. Manchester Business School
10. NYU Stern

I have heard to switch domains, as I wish to do, one needs to do a two year course? Is this true?

Also, as far as my list is concerned, am I over-reaching?

Looking forwards to your response,

Sreenadh

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. It is interesting to hear of a software engineer wanting to switch over to marketing, but certainly if you are staying in the same realm and marketing the IT project and products etc, your skills could be very valuable. In terms of 2 year vs 1 year, there is no 'mandatory' requirement but certainly 2 years makes more sense in that you have more time to explore, definitely have an internship (though some 1 year programs do as well), more opportunities to make contacts with companies and classmates, and more time to take courses in your new area (i.e. marketing). I think your school list is reasonable, with NYU and ISB being the most competitive on the list, and you'll want to narrow it down of course, given how time-intensive it is to complete each application. Most apply to 3-4 schools MAX per round, or often total. Keep us posted on other questions and your progress, good luck to you!

Hello,

Thank you for your response and for clarifying the 2 year/1 year matter!

As far as shortlisting schools goes, can I have your opinion on which schools among the ones I have listed you think would most enable me to make this switch? Should I look at the schools which have a reputation as great marketing schools or should I assume that all of them will equally help me change into marketing as I wish to do.
And is there any school I am not considering that would be a better for for me than the ones I have listed?

Thanks,
Sreenadh

Hi there,

I would def add Fuqua to your consideration list, and maybe Kelley and/or McCombs. In terms of narrowing down, it's tougher because you have such a wide variety of schools there (geographically, in terms of class sizes and curriculums, etc). Here's some more reading on choosing schools: http://info.mbamission.com/Selecting-Yo ... ram-E-Book

There are a lot of factors to consider that will hopefully help you narrow it down! And think a lot about your post-MBA job/employability... based on where the school is located, and also from looking at 'employment statistics' on each school's website.
