Profile Evaluation - 24 year old African American female [#permalink] New post 02 Jun 2014, 10:41
Thank you in advance for evaluating my profile. I am a 24 year old African American female and first generation college graduate.

1.BS in Finance from a State School (Think SEC)

2. 3.34 GPA, 3.75 business GPA

3.Will have 2.5 years work experience at time of application (a little over 3 years at matriculation) as a tax consultant at a midsize corporate advisory firm (Competitors: Big 4, McGladrey, Grant Thornton) My client base is healthcare and hospital corporations and medical device manufacturers. Extensive knowledge of medical devices, consumables and drugs (who sells what and how they are used) as well as healthcare and manufacturing tax laws and regulations in multiple states and jurisdictions

4.Have already received confirmation that I will officially be promoted to Senior Consultant in November. Currently serve as lead consultant on the team and distribute tasks and projects to other consultants

5.Senior year of college, interned for the Secretary of Revenue and Chief of Staff at the State Department of Revenue

6.Volunteer: Habitat for Humanity, Group Activity Leader at local Girls’ Inc. Chapter, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of underprivileged minority girls in the community, also serve as a student mentor for one of the girls at the organization

7.Extra-Curricular: Competitive adult league tennis player, in a kickball league with coworkers, and very dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle being an active gym member and practicing healthy nutrition habits

8.Scheduled to take the GMAT Aug 2nd . Practice score as of June 1st on Manhattan GMAT’s CAT was 700 (42V, 44Q). Striving to get at least a 720 on the real exam

Schools of Interest: Round 1: UCLA, UC Berkeley, Texas (McCombs), Duke. Round 2: USC and SMU (Cox)

MBA Goal: Transfer my knowledge of the healthcare industry from consulting for hospitals to corporate finance for biotech/pharmaceutical vendors and manufacturers in financial planning and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and R&D finance at companies such as: Amgen, Johnson & Johnson, McKesson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, etc.

I understand my years of work experience is well below the average of most business school students. What do you believe my chances are despite this or what can I do to make my profile stronger so that adcoms will take a chance on me?

Expert's post
Regardless of your relatively short work experience, I consider you to be astrong and competitive applicant to your programs of interest, assuming you score at or near your target GMAT. Although your experience is on the low side, it appears to demonstrate a high level of leadership, impact, and (prospective) advancement. Your academic record is solid, and your extracurriculars are strong.

To further improve your chances, continue achieving and leading at work and outside! Also, any efforts you make to research and prepare for your goals will help; don't hesitate to discuss such efforts in your applications. It would show resourcefulness, commitment, and seriousness of purpose.

Good luck!
