I plan on applying to business school in fall of 2012 for admittance in fall of 2013. Just trying to get a handle on places that I may have a chance of gaining admittance to.

Personal Information: 25 (27 at matriculation), male, Caucasian
GMAT: 680, 6.0 AWA
Undergraduate: Public Ivy (Big Ten)
Double Major: Finance/Entrepreneurship
GPA: 3.57

Work Experience:
16 months - Trust Company/Wealth Management Division
2 years (currently) - Peace Corps (East Africa) working as a Health/Economic Development Volunteer. Most of my projects will involve the health sector, but given my background, I will likely put a business/economics twist on many of them. One of my potential projects is working with the local People Living With HIV/AIDS Association (PLWHAs) to start a microfinance institution that would lend to PLWHAs who are otherwise unable to obtain financing to start small businesses here in my town.

Although my GMAT score is on the low side for elite business schools, I feel that my academic background/work experience may make me an attractive candidate. In particular, I am wondering what my chances would be for H/S/W, Kellogg, Booth, Ross, Darden, Babson, etc. Is admittance to these institutions even within the realm of possibilities?

Thanks.

The only thing holding you back is the GMAT. For the top 16 schools, you need at least a 700 or greater in order for the GMAT not to be a significant handicap. With your current score, no matter how you slice and dice it, it's going to be a hurdle. Can you still get in with that score? Sure. But it becomes much more of a gamble.

With a 700 or greater, you will be in the running for any of the schools you listed, including H/S/W. With your current score, you're going to be a stretch at all the top 16 schools, especially those in the top 8 like H/S/W, Kellogg and Booth.

You have a pretty strong profile - I think you know that. You owe it to yourself to retake the GMAT, and do whatever it takes to boost that score by 20 points at least. You may be a strong candidate, but do not underestimate your competition for these schools, because there's more than enough strong candidates to go around.

You can do it.
