Profile Evaluation - 700 GMAT, 3.8 GPA, 3 years work ex [#permalink]
26 Aug 2012, 21:08
Hi,
I would really appreciate your input on my profile and choice of schools. Thank you in advance for your time.
Demographics: 24, female, Indian Program: Full Time MBA in Marketing GMAT: 700 (50Q, 34V, 5.5 AWA) Undergrad GPA: 3.8 (Fisher School of Business, Marketing and Supply Chain Management majors), graduated in 2010. Work Profile: 3 years full time with US Airways at the time of entry. Worked in finance (budgeting and forecasting for a year), now in airport staffing (operations finance). Interned with Perfetti Van Melle as a brand management intern (8 weeks), worked with Auld Technologies on a new product development project (6 months while I was in college). Other activities: Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor, Free Arts of Arizona Mentor for youth at risk, Swimming instructor (All 3 current). Previously in College: Entrepreneurship club VP, P&G and Nestle Leadership Camps, Dean's leadership conference, Habitat for Humanity.
I am targetting Kellogg and Ross (dream schools), UCLA and NYU (targets) and Emory (safe bet). Can you please suggest some more safe bets or better targets?
Also, is it advisable to talk about my work ex and other activities from college and maybe significant ones from high school? (got a scholarship to go to Germany for a month, proficiency in german and was one of the 5 selected from India, was also State Level Swimming Champion in India).
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hello, I think you've got a strong profile and a very good school list. Your academic record is pretty good, and your GMAT is just on target. Your professional experience with US Airways is very interesting and unique, especially now that you are more on the operations side. You're a young candidate though, so I would urge you to really make sure you have strong professional leadership stories (most candidates have a couple more years work experience under their belts by the time they apply, which often means they've had deeper leadership experiences, more promotions, etc. Just something for you to be aware of.) Your extracurriculars are pretty strong as well. I think you've got especially strong leadership roles/stories from college, but you don't want to lean too heavily on these. Since you're a relatively recent graduate, I think you can still draw from these experience, but don't exclusively talk about college; in fact, I'd try to only use maybe 1 college story if possible. Difficult to say without knowing the full range of your experiences/story options. I would advise you to stay away from high school stories -- but you can point that out in your resume if you feel it's a significant achievement. I think your reach schools are great. For targets, you could add Duke. For safety, maybe UT Austin (McCombs). Just some ideas - all have pretty strong marketing programs. Good luck!
