Hi Alex,
I was wondering if you could give me a general idea of what my chances are at being accepted to a top flight U.S. business school (Top 12). My exam is scheduled for the 30th of this month and i've been taking mock GMATs with scores in the 640-690 range. I am going to get my MBA so I can switch industries (while I like finance, I want to work in the field that I am truly passionate about-Media. I envision something in media finance is what I would do right out of school)
I am 26 and currently work as a trader (2 years in this role) at one of the largest U.S. financial firms but unlike most firms that have returned to business as usual, my firm has been explicitly tasked with continuing to help in the recovery of the economy. Before that, I worked as a strategy analyst for a different portfolio in the same company for a year.
I went to a city university in New York (didn't have money to go anywhere else) where I left with a 3.67 GPA and graduated Cum Laude. I had to take time out from undergrad because I was a member of the National Guard and shipped off to Iraq for a year,so I was a full year behind my peers when I came back which forced me to take 21 credits a semester with summer school and winter sessions in between while balancing a weekend job and internships in the city.
I'm not sure how enthralling my story is given the large amount of applicants now and if I would even get a look by the Adcom if I don't score above a 700 due to my school's lack of a reputation. Will my work experience, military experience, and perseverance push me over the edge even if I score a 660? Thank you for your time and I think the whole GMAT community really appreciates this service.
The schools that i'm definitely applying to are: NYU, Columbia, Wharton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Haas, and UCLA.
