I'm interested in applying for a top business school program. I'm an AA Male with 3 years of experience at a large Mid-Atlantic law firm. I took the GMAT in 2008 when I was in college and scored a 670, but I did not end up applying to business school (my plan at the time was to do a JD/MBA program, but I decided to just go for the law degree). My college and law school grade point averages are not great 3.0 and 3.2 respectively (I was in the top 25% of my class in law school, but I slacked off after I got a job offer prior to my third year). Neither school was a top program (though my law school is a top 25).
I'll obviously have to take the GMAT again, and I'm hoping that with 90-100 hours of study I can be in the 650-720 range. I'm so far removed from any math that I might end up closer to 650 than 700 though. My plan is to apply to all of the US News top 20 except Emory, Yale, and Dartmouth. I'd be very grateful if you could help me evaluate my chances.
Based on your profile, if you score let's say 680, you should have realistic chances at all non-M7 schools in top 20. I would recommend applying at a couple of M7 (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Columia, Booth, Sloan, Kellogg) schools while at 3-5 schools other than M7. If you score above 700, even M7 will be within reach.
