I am fairly new to GMAT Club, and I was trying to get some input on my profile.

Applying: Fall 2013 for Fall 2014; #1 choice - Northwestern

Undergrad Degree: United States Merchant Marine Academy - Kings Point, NY (3.3 GPA)

Major: Marine Transportation (Navigational Watch Officer)
Extra's: Ran cross country for 4 yrs (captain of team for 3 yrs); ran varsity track&field for 4 yrs

GMAT: 680 (Way lower than all my practice tests, so I'm taking it again in a month)

W/E: Dynamic Positioning Operator / Chief Mate Unlimited Tonnage on a drillship for a very large Danish shipping company; owner/apiarist for a bee-keeping company that donates a large portion of profits to fighting teen obesity in my very obese state; worked on the Hill in DC for 6 months for the Congressman who nominated me for USMMA. I'm also in the Navy Reserves.

Rec's: Captain of my drillship; professor; former Congressman

Thanks so much in advance for any advice, input, opinions on chances etc. IMO my weakest (by far) component is the GMAT.

Your profile is impressive. You belong to a non-traditional industry and this sets you apart from other candidates. B-schools love to have applicants from various industries as they bring diversity to the class.

Your GMAT is not bad - just average . Good to know that you aim at improving your GMAT. A 720+ GMAT would definitely strengthen your profile . Since you plan to apply in Fall 2013, you will have sufficient time to prepare a strategy for putting together a strong application that showcases your candidacy in the best light for your dream school , North western. I would sugegst that you add 3-4 more schools to your list of target schools. The ideal strategy for you may be- 1 dream school , 2 mid range and 2 safe schools.

Good luck on your application.

I hope it helped.
