Hi there,

Thanks for your post. Great job looking ahead, as I believe you said you are aiming to apply next year. There is a little bit of an immediate question of -- do you NEED an MBA??!! That you'd want to be sure you can definitely answer through your applications, but if you are planning on literally starting a charter school/your own school, it may make sense. But another big question is whether you have or will get any training in education? As that would seem a logical requirement as well, to a certain degree, even with some teaching experience.

There are a large number of Indian applicants with IT degrees/engineering experience applying to business school, so you would need to work hard to determine what it is about you that makes you stand out. In terms of the coming year, any experiences you can gain in leadership, people and project management, teamwork, and examples where you go above and beyond and make an impact, are all important for a b-school application.

In terms of social enterprise/social entrepreneurship, the most well known programs (also very competitive) are Yale, Haas, Stanford, Kellogg, HBS. Slightly down the ranking but still competitive-- Ross, Kenan-Flagler, Fuqua, Case Western.

Probably the biggest question I see coming up is just the feasibility of your goals and whether the MBA is definitely the best way to pursue them. It may be, but you'll just need to show that you've done your 'homework' and have a feel for what the exact post-MBA steps will be.

Good luck!

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the suggestions. Ok so you suggest that I improve my leadership skills. Further, you said I should give the schools a good reason for an MBA. Alright.

Can you suggest how can I write my story to make MBA sound reasonable and essential? Just an outline.

Hi Nishanth,

Apologies but I can't really suggest how you would write your story or a given essay.... it does need to come from YOU and be genuine. When we work with clients, we do extensive brainstorming with them to really ensure they think of every possible idea, story and angle and then help them narrow down and choose the best topics and examples for essays, and then we provide feedback extensively on all outline and essay drafts... that said we are not able to come up with the outline or essays basis for you!

But what I tell my clients when they are stuck, is to start off being entirely HONEST... in other words, write out an essay answer to the question 'why do you want an MBA' without worrying about what the admissions officers are thinking, write it as if you were telling a colleague. That often gets the best initial ideas out and storyline, and then from there you can edit it and tweak as needed for the application/admissions purposes.

It's just very important that you are able to explain clearly and convincingly the WHY you want this degree! Otherwise others who CAN do so will be admitted over you.

Good luck!
