profile evaluation... can i make it? [#permalink] New post 29 Nov 2010, 04:10
Hi friends,

Let me briefly post my profile here:

GMAT: 740
GPA: 3.93 / 5
XII : 83 %
X : 89.2 %

Prefect for 3 years in school. Member of both school and college cricket & soccer teams. Additionally, member in various groups like festival co- ordination committee, magazine committee etc. and also one of the founders of the departmental wall magazine committee in college.

Drawback(s): 1. Typical profile wrt being an Indian, IT , male.
2. Will have around 15 months professional work ex. by August 2011.

Additionally, working on coveted applications, which are directly relevant to MBA, called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) apps. Have also been extensively involved with 2 NGOs as a voluntary service provider.

Reco letters: One each from my Project Lead (professional), Departmental HOD(acads) and Manager of NGO(extracurricular).

Target Schools for fall 2011: 1. Terry College of Business.
2. Georgia Institute of Technology.

Can you please provide a frank opinion as to whether i have a realistic chance of making it this year? I have already prepared the essays and just waiting for my TOEFL score. So, I have just 2 weeks before I submit the final apps.

You will have a much easier time getting into Terry than Tech. Terry is a much larger program and is not ranked in top tier. Tech only admits 75 students per year and is in the top 25 in both B-week and US News rankings. You might consider the new Tech evening program, which shares faculty and curriculum with the daytime program (even take final exams together, so networking opportunities are good with the full time students). I think you would do better career wise with the Tech MBA vs the Terry MBA. The daytime MBA is the same degree on paper and you also get to keep earning money while you go back to school. Having said that, you may have a good shot at the full time program at Tech anyway with your high GMAT, but you nailed your weaknesses on the head: not much WE and large applicant pool (Male, Indian, IT). Tip for Tech: you will be interviewed by someone from the adcom as well as the career placement center, so come prepared to demonstrate why you are EMPLOYABLE after graduation. Employability is HUGE at GT, and they ranked last year second behind HBS in percentage employed at graduation. For this reason, they are more adamant than ever about only bringing in students who will get a job very quickly. If you have visa issues or lack a clear vision for your immediate post MBA job goals, you will have a hard time vying for a spot. Hope this helps.

Hi bryantmichaels,

Thank you so much for such a thorough and insightful reply. I am sure it will help immensely in the coming days.

There are a few questions, however, that came to my mind after reading your reply... hope you'll clarify them for me...

1. Does GT interview everyone who applies?

2. What qualities do they look for in terms of employbility? If they are talking about confidence, good comm. skills etc. then yes, i have that. But if they are talking about something completely different then it really depends on what they are asking for. Hence, how should i approach the interviews, specially the one from career centre? Should i have a list of companies (!)which i want to get into after graduation or something similar?

3. Do you think I will get an interview call from Terry?

4. I know I am asking for too much of a favor but I simply could not resist the temptation of asking this question; Assuming I have decent ( neither too good nor too bad ) interviews, how would you rate my chances, say on a scale of 10, of making it this year? I am asking this because I have a very limited budget and would only apply to the two schools mentioned above, but I am really keen on making it this time.

Samidh:

answering your questions:

1) No GT does not interview everyone, but does not admit anyone they do not interview. make sense? If you do not get an invitation to interview, I'd contact Paula Wilson and explain your desire for an interview---implore her that if they only let in one international student to the program next year, you want to be that person, and then have some compelling reasons why!

2) Same answer for Terry (just not sure who the director of admissions is over there now).

3) Hard to say on a scale of 1 to 10. Both schools are trying to boost their international percentage, but they get a LOT of Indian applicants (especially Tech due to the technology affiliation). Your best bet is your GMAT, which is way above average for both schools.

Make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing to look over your essays before submitting...

Sorry...forgot to speak to the employability. Basically, they will interview you at Tech like a potential employer would. They are trying to figure out how you come across in a job interview and thus how easy it will be for you to get a job. Tech loathes overconfident people with a bad attitude and look for people who know what they want to do, but have some humility and flexibility as well. having less than average WE, you should work on your response to questions about that and why you will still be attractive to your target employers despite having less WE.

Hi Bryant,

just to make sure I am following what you meant, are you suggesting me to contact Paula Wilson and Rich Daniels directly if I do not get an interview call?

I am sorry I am being so irritatingly dumb here. Its just that the MBA is very important to me. Its not just because I am looking for a better job. In fact,I am happy with my job. But it is a part of the plan I have to make my dream come true. I have in fact mentioned it in my essays. And moreover, I feel the timing would be perfect if I can graduate in 2013 for more than one reason. And because of the budget, I am applying to these 2 colleges only. Hence, I am sort of desperate to make it happen this time. Hope you understand.

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. The old mantra "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" is a noble axiom. You will need to approach it in a thoughtful way, identifying the fact that you realize not everyone can interview, but you are only applying to Tech and then briefly explain (in a minute or less) your passion for going there and why it means so much. It's not an easy task to convince someone of something they have already decided on, so be prepared for some pushback. Get creative, and be persistent, but considerate. Clearly this advice only applies if you are not invited for an interview. Perhaps you will be invited! Good luck!

Hi Bryant,

Can you give me some instances where a student has not made the cut despite giving a good interview at Terry? I have been invited to a telephone interview. But I wanted to know if this is just a formality or do I stand a decent chance?
