profile evaluation... can i make it? [#permalink] New post 01 Dec 2010, 03:50
Hi friends,

Let me briefly post my profile here:

GMAT: 740
GPA: 3.93 / 5
XII : 83 %
X : 89.2 %

Prefect for 3 years in school. Member of both school and college cricket & soccer teams. Additionally, member in various groups like festival co- ordination committee, magazine committee etc. and also one of the founders of the departmental wall magazine committee in college.

Drawback(s): 1. Typical profile wrt being an Indian, IT , male.
2. Will have around 15 months professional work ex. by August 2011.

Additionally, working on coveted applications, which are directly relevant to MBA, called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) apps. Have also been extensively involved with 2 NGOs as a voluntary service provider.

Reco letters: One each from my Project Lead (professional), Departmental HOD(acads) and Manager of NGO(extracurricular).

Target Schools for fall 2011: 1. Terry College of Business.
2. Georgia Institute of Technology.

Can you please provide a frank opinion as to whether i have a realistic chance of making it this year? I have already prepared the essays and just waiting for my TOEFL score. So, I have just 2 weeks before I submit the final apps.

Feel free to get in touch if you feel I can be of some assistance to you. You can find me in Facebook if you search!

Hi Samidh,

Well, I'm not sure what the upshot is. It sounds like you have already targeted your schools and have your essays ready, so the applications are going to head out the door. Wagering a guess as to whether you might get in is something I suppose I could do, but I'm not sure to what end. Usually when I handicap someone's chances, it is only to help them make decisions on when and where to apply or whether they need consulting help to make it happen. I'd be guessing just to guess in your case and I don't know how that can help you.

That said, what I can do is talk a little bit about what to do IF you don't get in. Again, you may very well, that's for the adcom to decide. But if you don't, I can at least assess reasons why that may happen. The first is that you are right, your work experience is very light and your career progression to date might seem a little typical for your demo. So if you are met with rejection, you will have a pretty good idea that it's not your academic profile that is the problem, but rather the execution of your application, your career progression, or both. We don't know the quality of the former (although I strongly recommend having a vetted consultant help you perfect them), so in focusing on the latter, I think the big thing you can do in a reapplication scenario is diversify your work experience. If you are mainly programming right now, seek a chance to take on a project management role. If you have worked only in India, use these cool projects or maybe client contacts to go work in the U.S. or Europe somewhere. If you can tilt your progression - especially if you can do it early - that will set you apart from a lot of other Indian, Male, IT candidates.

I hope that none of this is necessary and that one or both of those two schools identify what seems to be a very sharp mind at work, but in the event you face a long wait, that is the approach I would recommend.

Hope this helps!
