Profile Evaluation (Columbia Fall 2009 FT-MBA Early Decision [#permalink] New post 23 Aug 2008, 08:46
Dear All,

I have been using GMAT Club for a several months for GMAT Prep and admission process advice. I found a tremendous amount of advice you guys have offered to clubbers and was impressed by your helpfulness. I know you all must be very busy, but if possible, please help me evaluate my profile when you have time.

I am looking to apply to Columbia Fall 2009 FT-MBA Early Decision. I know the process already started and I would like to submit my application by end of August. Here is my profile:

Age - 24
Ethnicity - Asian
Languages - Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Japanese

1st - 640 (Q40, V38)
2nd - 640 (Q47, V31)
3rd - 680 (Q47, V35)

Columbia University
Graduated - May 2006
Major - Computer Engineering
Cumulative GPA - 3.437
Major GPA - 3.6
GPA by semesters - varied from 3.1 ~ 3.7

Field - electronic trading developer in a financial firm's equities program trading department
Experience - 2 years
I have demonstrated strong leadership, initiative, creativity, and personality in these two years. As an analyst I have not only contributed major efforts in building each of the program trading technology's applications - trading, booking, risk, reporting - but also earned major trust & recognition in my knowledge and ability to learn fast from both my team and business partners. I have been nominated for promotion within less than two years since I joined the workforce. I asked my two managers, a Principal and a VP, whom I work very closely with, to write my recommendations. Their writing will best represent my abilities and impact to the team.

- webmaster of an Asian society
- participated in event planning in major cultural shows
- media & distribution lead for all events in an Asian network
- lead event planner for lunar new year celebration
- lead event planner for relay for life cancer fund raiser
- catering coordinator for other Asian network events

Why Columbia MBA
I want to change my career to a more business/finance oriented role and eventually start my own business in Asia. Columbia is my first choice because - it has a well-rounded education, has programs that instill values/creativity/personality in students, strongly promotes entrepreneurship mindset, has an international awareness culture & diverse alumni pool - particularly in Asia. I don't have very good grades nor very good scores on paper, but I am very strong in practice. For a school like Columbia that offers practical/real-life scenarios in courses, I believe I can find myself a suitable yet challenging arena. I am currently doing more research on the school, and hopefully I can chat directly with a student.

Some Questions I Have
Given that my 3rd time is 680 and below Columbia's average, do you think I should take it again? I have been struggling with this question for weeks, but I have decided that I should move on with this score since I want to perfect other aspects of my application. As said in my most recent posting (FYI - 8-t66725), I am a poor standard test taker, but it doesn't reflect my ability to handle rigorous school work.
- If I do not re-take the GMAT, should I address my score in the optional essay section of the application?
- Is it still worthwhile to apply for Columbia ED in late September? (Columbia's ED deadline is early October)

If possible, please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks much in advance!

Dear Freedom angel,
In my opinion, there are two weak areas in your profile. first is GMAT and you have identified it correctly. since you have reached 680, i would advice take one more chance and try push it over 700. Secondly at 2 years , your work ex is low. Further your GPA, although ok independently is not vovering up either for low GMAT or low work ex. I would advice, waiting one year, throroughly preparing for MAT and adding an addional year to your work ex. Further it won`t be bad idea to add something in community service.

Hi folks,

Well, I am planning to apply for the MiM programmes Sept 2017 intake, so which gives me approximately 18 months from now for me to complete my application. I want to know how good is my profile as of now and hence I request you to evaluate my profile and provide suggestions on the areas of development.

CGPA: 6.8/10 ... as a number this looks like a low cgpa.. But then in my university this is a first class CGPA. ( non -IIT top 20 engineering schools in India) Suggestion needed on this part.

GMAT- determined to get 700+ ... have been scoring 650+ in mock tests and I am planing to take my GMAT in JAN 2017. So this gives me 5 more months to prepare

Extra Curriculars

As of now Two Internships.. One as a client relations management intern in one of the top 4 insurance firms in India and the other one is a marketing Internship from one of the top three Tractor manufacturing firms in India. One more thing is some people say that it is good to have as many internships as possible during undergrads. But Some other people say that too many internships is looked down upon and a maximum of two internships is to be maintained. Suggestion needed on this part.

Secretary of The Wall Street Club (finance) club in my college.

Working on a online trading based paper along with a friend of mine which should be ready in another couple of months.

Apart from these

I have attended 3 Model united Nations conferences representing the delegations of various countries.
Quizzer during my school time and have won a lot of quiz competitions.
Business director of a web startup which failed after one year of decent reach though no profits were made.
Active member of the Entrepreneurship Development Club of my college
Have organised a lot of events which includes a Technical workshop which was attended by over 1000 Engineering students from all over the country.

Hereby I request you to kindly evaluate my profile assuming that I score a 700 in my GMAT and a overall cgpa of 7.2/10 by the time I start applying.

My target schools in the order of preference

1. LBS
2.Michigan Ross MiM - first intake Sept 2014.
3. Duke Fuqua - MMS FOB
5. HEC
7. Rotterdam School of Management
8. Hult Business School

Thanks in Advance.

To add that this website is helping a lot of students these days. The best educational forums I have ever seen. Keep going.
