Profile evaluation :: Consulting 3 years :: 720 GMAT [#permalink] New post 01 Apr 2013, 10:20
Hi, I am a 26 years old Indian with 3 years experience in management (Strategy & Operations) consulting. Having worked for 2 start-ups, I had the opportunity to lead several engagements independently. I also received a ‘partner commendation for outstanding contribution’ for one engagement.

My GMAT score isn’t all that great -720 (Q49, V40)

I pursued my undergrad in computer science engineering from the international campus of a top 10 engineering college in India (Bits – Pilani, Dubai). My Undergrad GPA is 3.1 (7.76/10).

No significant extracurricular activities at college level. However, I was part of the organizing team for our college sports fest. I am currently on the leadership team of our Alumni organization (Voluntary role). I play some tennis at club level (nothing spectacular though!)

I aspire to pursue my MBA from a top-10 B-school. I intend to apply during Round 1 for 2014 intake. Do I stand a chance?

Post my MBA I’d like to work for a large consulting firm for some time. I find this line of work to be very exciting and challenging. Although daunting at times, the work is very dynamic and the lifestyle is pretty fascinating.

My problem is that I haven’t really worked for any big names. All my work experience is at start-up firms, which handle small and medium clients. Will this be a setback for my candidature? Also, my present firm isn’t doing all that well. Consequently, I have been idling for quite some time now. 

So, where do I stand? Please Advise!

Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for sharing your profile. It's not as important that the firms you've worked for are well-known, but much more about the breadth/depth of work experience they offered. Start-ups usually offer deeper leadership "training" than large organizations because there is so much work and so few people to do it. So, I'd focus more on what you did versus where you did it. To that end, I think your work experience is strong (they don't have to know that you've been idle the past couple months - focus on the strong stories), your academic background is strong (my understanding is that a 7.76 in India is actually relatively higher than a 3.1 in the U.S.), your GMAT is strong (a 720 is a great score! What was your verbal percentile?). The main weaknesses I see are your lack of extracurriculars and community activities.

I'd say you can aim for programs in the range of Duke, Darden, NYU. Choose one or two safety programs below this range and one or two reach program above this range, and you should be in good shape.

Good luck,
Mili
