Profile Evaluation Consulting to Start Up? [#permalink]
15 Sep 2011, 09:21
I just completed my first year at a top consulting boutique (monitor / lek / parthenon) and am seriosuly considering making a move to a start-up, but really wanted to know how it would affect my b-school chances given if the start-up fails b-school is a fantastic, costly safety net.
The start-up is VC backed, VC founded with a top tier team. It currently has ~10 members and will have about 100mm within the next few weeks. It is not unreasonably to assume 500mm in revenues by the end of year one. The start-up is in the healthcare space.
Lets say if I apply to b-school to matriculate in 2 / 3 years from now, with 2 years at the start-up and 1 in consulting will I be able / likely, to get into top 5 programs? I'm reasonably confident if I spent 3 years at the firm I would be able to get into these programs (as those leaving to go to b-school have faired well, mostly Kellogg, UChicago etc.), so I just want to make sure I am not seriously affecting my b-school chances by taking a chance.
I don't know if its applicable, but the rest of my profile is a good public school (Maryland, Penn state, Illinois) with a 3.42 gpa double major in marketing and supply chain management. I had great EC's in college (start-up, fraternity president etc) and now am involved in a program to help kids get into college. GMAT I still need to take, but I should be able to deliver an acceptable score.
Really any advice you can provide would be sooooooo invaluable.
Thanks so much,
