Profile Evaluation for 2012 applicant [#permalink] New post 08 Aug 2011, 04:41
Hi
I am planning for FT MBA next year (2012)

Indian/IT/Male
Age: 28
GMAT: 690(Q49, V34) :(. I was really disappointed with the score. I know I could have scored around 710-730.

Undergraduate:
Bachelor in Engineering, GPA 7.18 (One of the top engineering schools in India)

WE
6 years of work experience in financial IT, including 3 years of International experience (Switzerland)
Leading a project team of 5 members since 1.5 years.

Extra Curricular:
- Lots of event organization within the organization
- Few NGO activities as part of company's CSR initiatives
- Lot of sports plus played & organized cricket competition in Europe
- Avid photographer
- Few Leadership experience from college (Club President)

Target Schools: INSEAD / HEC / IE / IESE / St Gallen

Post MBA
I would like to move into Business Development or Consulting role in Internet/Technology in Europe.

Since I belong to the most competitive applicant pool, do I have a realistic chance at my target schools. Also should I retake my GMAT?

Well, if you can only expect 20 more points on the GMAT, I think you'd be better off just applying this year. With your super competitive pool, things will be a bit on the tough side, but your GMAT is good, and if you have the rest of the background (good work experience and stories etc.) you should have a fighting chance. Now you need to invest your time in making a stellar application.

Hi longbyte75,

Your career goals are in line with the choice of schools and relevant to your experience. Your GMAT of 690 is good. Write it again only if you feel you can score upwards of 730 or so. Instead you can focus your energies on your essays. Now it is true that you belong to a super competitive pool, but if you break the bias, you might get attention. What I mean is, in your essays, do not focus on stuff that all candidates coming from a similar background might focus on. Instead focus on softer aspects like cultural sensitivity, focus on your international experience and highlight your leadership potential. Show your passion towards your goal of joining a tech firm through relevant examples.

Hi,
Your profile looks strong but the key to applying to schools in Europe is being able to highlight your leadership experiences and demonstrate how you've been able to draw from them. Focus on providing examples to show how the experiences have driven your personal and professional development. Your GMAT score is around the average score for the schools, the other metrics look good too, the essays and recommendations will be crucial in the final analysis.

Hi,

INSEAD is the only school in the list you have mentioned which is a little stretch. But still since you have international work ex which INSEAD values you can take a shot.

A lot will depend on how you present your work ex and extra currics in the essays.
