Work exp - I have 3 years of work exp in a business advisory company. We are a start-up, this has helped me get experience in different areas. I have helped launch (arranging funds / preparing successful business plans / checking progress) our sister companies and some other projects.
My GMAT score is 680 (48 in quants, dont remember my verbal). I completed B.Com with focus on Accounting and Finance in Summer 2010. GPA = 76%. I have completed the Level 1 CFA exam.
I organised an inter-collegiate Organ Donation Awareness Program along with the National Network for Organ Sharing (NNOS, India). Was an active member of the Business Club, participating in and helping them organise a number of intra-departmental programs/competitions. Scripted and directed two winning plays in college-wide inter-departmental cultural meets and performed in one play after college. I have also volunteered with Blue Cross of India (Nationwide Animal Rescue and Shelter Organisation). I was a volunteer and volunteer coordinator with Orinam for organising the Chennai LGBT Pride events (incl. parade, awareness events, social group meets and cultural events) for 2013.
I plan to quit my current job and join a HIV/AIDS support NGO (full-time) in the next couple of months.
My target programs: MBA in Social Enterprise / NonProfit Management in Fuqua (Duke University), Ross (University of Michigan), Haas (UC Berkeley), McCombs (University of Texas, Austin)
I plan to apply for the Round 1, hoping to start in Fall 2014.
My Post MBA goal is to initially work in the Management of a Non Profit Organisation and later establish my own Socially Beneficial Business Venture / Non-Profit Organisation targeting Animal Protection or Human Rights.
Specific Concerns: Will I need proof to support the above volunteer/extra-curricular work? Will it make a difference if I submit my application after joining the NGO and enter that as my current job? I don't have any work experience in my desired field, or a very high GMAT score - will I still be able to get through? Also, how much should I focus on my specific interest in this field in my Admission Essays? Thanks in advance.
Enter as your current job, the current job you have -- not the one you intend to get. If you are doing it when you apply, it's your current job.
Bschools do background checks to confirm job information once you are accepted. Make sure the information you provide is accurate.
I think you are aiming too high when you apply to Haas, Fuqua and Ross. f you want to have a stretch school or two, chose 1-2, but you should be more competitive at most of your target programs. You may want to consider USC, Georgetown, and UNC. UT is a good option.
You may also want to consider postponing your application for a year so that you can have more relevant experience when you apply.
Best,
Linda
