Profile evaluation if you can! [#permalink] New post 19 Jun 2014, 15:42
Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at this.

Until a few days ago I was planning on waiting until next year to apply to an array of rank 10-20 schools.
However, I am strongly considering apply to Vanderbilt in the early admission round this year because it would be extremely convenient for me.
Want to go into Mgmt Consulting.

1. What are my chances at Vandy?
2. Since Vandy doesn't place high at top consulting firms, do you think I have a good chance next year at Duke/Darden? I would like to work at MBB or even a Tier II firm.

3.34 GPA from a regionally known Liberal Arts School near Vandy (B.B.A. in Finance)
700 blind GMAT mock last week. Will study for a month or two until I hit 750.

WE
1 year as a mutual fund analyst at a small mutual fund manager. Internship turned into a full time offer. We ran a diverse balanced fund that required a lot of attention. I was in charge of balancing the portfolio as well as initiating trades. Also did quite a bit of research related to the strategy of the portfolio and am mentioned in a few papers that the fund manager published for my work.

1.5 years as a market research analyst for a building materials manufacturing firm. $1.1B revenue. After ~8 months I was placed in an Emerging Leader Rotation and worked on several large projects for the execs. Only 22 people in the company chosen for that program. Stellar references here.

~4 months as a financial analyst in FP&A for a company that owns a portfolio of retail concepts. $1.3B revenue. Will be going public by the time I apply to Vandy and I have been an instrumental part of the due diligence for that. Each concept has a financial team that reports to our department. I consolidate the financials from each team and prepare them for the execs and the board. Only a Sr. Director of FP&A (my boss) in between us.
^ Would like to avoid using references here because of the short time frame. I can't imagine them being very excited that I'm leaving so quickly.

Extra
Involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters for 2 years.
Congress member and Policy Review Committee Chairman of my colleges' student government.
(meh but interesting) Band I was in in High School got signed to a pretty big label. Spent the summer touring, quit to go to school.

Thank you so much if you made it this far!

Hello,

If you achieve a mid 700s GMAT, I believe you are a viable and credible applicant to Vandy as well as to Darden and Duke. As I read your WE, it looks like some meaningful growth with each step. If that’s correct, then I’d view Vandy as on the border between on-par and reasonable reach with a 730+ GMAT, and the other programs reasonable reaches.

One potential danger is that varied roles plus your goals don’t automatically cohere into a clear “story” – in your application keep this actor in mind and develop a strategy and approach that creates this coherence (you may have to identify and describe indirect connections as well as direct ones).
