Thanks for your reply but not really interested in doing an MBA if its not a top ranked school. I have a good idea for where I stand I guess. Will do a couple of apps and see where it goes. I am not even sure on a schools like NYU. Thanks

Hi Jon,

Thanks for providing excellent insights in the forums.

My profile:

Age: 29
Undergrad: UNC KF- Major: Finance; GPA: 3.3
Grad School: WUSTL Olin Master's in Finance; GPA- 3.5
GMAT: 690

I have been working at the same firm after graduation for about 3.5 years now and, between undergrad and grad school I worked in a mid-tier consulting firm in Chicago for a year. The place where I am currently employed is a small private equity firm in Singapore. We invest in local SE Asian firms and also small deals in the West. Our fund size is USD200m. I started as an Investment Analyst for the first year and then I was promoted to Associate and now I am a Senior Associate at the firm. I have worked on 7 deals over the years with a total value of USD 80mm. I have also managed/supervised a total of 3 full-time employees and 2 interns. It has been a great fun working here for the past 3.5 years, I have learnt a lot about how to make investments and also how to grow firms. We are a firm that's very much involved in the growth of our portfolio firms. We take a keen interest in the operations of firms and I have been associated with a lot of operational issues as well like helping with making pitches to big clients and even recruiting the teams. Other than operational side of it, most of my work has been with deal sourcing, due diligence, deal negotiation and structurations. But now I am have become quite bored with the same cycle of work over and over. I want to do a change of scenery and industry. Decided that a MBA would probably be the best solution.

I am looking for a less stressful job after MBA like a strategy gig at F500. And the schools I am looking at are Kellogg, Booth, NYU, Columbia, Haas, Anderson, LBS, MIT. Prefer to be in cities.

It would be great if you could comment on my candidature. Thanks.

Best,

OP

Hello OP :)

So overall your work experience seems very strong, Private Equity plus Consulting. And your goals make sense too.

The two major difficulties are 1: Indian Male (I know I know.. nothing to do about that other than make the most of it )
and 2. GMAT - It's low for the schools you are aiming at, esp. as an Indian candidate, as they have the pick of the litter.

I think if you wanted to go for a "Top School or Bust" strategy this year because you decide that it would be much better for you to apply now, you could give it a shot, relying on your work experience. But be prepared to perhaps retake the GMAT and reapply should this not work out.

Either that, or you can moderate your school list to give you better chances.

Any thoughts?
Jon

Allright,
So like I wrote go "Top or Bust" on a few top schools this year (but not all, keep a few aces in the hole), and should it not work out, the major thing to work on would be the GMAT for next year.

Best of luck!
Jon
