Warm greetings!
1. I am an Indian male, 27 years with 6 years experience in Indian Oil corporation, Biggest company of India with Fortune 500 ranking of 81 globally and $100 B turnover annually. It is a public sector enterprise with 55% market share for all petroleum product consumption across the country reaching 66 million households network through LPG distributor network and 22,000 fueling stations. I am working in marketing division of company with profile as Assistant manager ( Retail sales) looking after sales performance of 45 Gas stations of particular district with annual sales target of $ 90 million. My job profile is to look after retail sales catering to population of 5 million of a particular district, ensuring desired quality and quantity to the customers, Routine inspections, making tie-up with high volume fleet players and industrial players , and identifying potential sites for Gas stations ( Typically a site needs investment of 0.4 million $ from an prospective investor) and hence faces a tough challenge of wooing the investors and enhance market participation of Organisation. I am in current profile for last 1 year. Prior to this I was in consumer sales department of the same Organisation for 5 years & used to deal with big corporate houses like JCB, Yamaha, American express, Maruti suzuki, Honda etc with each of these clients having fuel consumption of more than $ 8 million annually.
2. GMAT-730 Q 50 /V 40
3. Undergrad degree: Bachelor of Technology in Electrical ; GPA of 3.27 from one of top 10 Engineering colleges in India. Was silver medalist and secured 2nd position in stream with placement in biggest organisation of country.
4. I am associated with JCI, a USA based NGO established in 1915 and having 2,00,000 volunteers across 100 countries. I am working as a Director on Chapter governing board of province chapter having total volunteer strength of 130. Organizing blood donation camps, career counselling at Esteemed schools of province, helping under privileged sections of society and numerous other such activities. The participation needs a considerable amount of time and devotion for community work and being a Director, I need to be more engaged. Apart from that, working with other volunteers for project" Hope Junction", a project started by me and my friends educating 43 slum children who literally study at road-side. Convincing their parents to send them to govt. school have been a challenging task as they earn through their children ( child labor is a serious problem in India).
5. Post MBA , I would like to work with a consulting firm reaching wide variety of clientele across globe. My exposure to marketing should help me connect better with industrial players and hence in pursuing my career goals.
Target schools are Harvard, Stanford, Yale, MIT, Wharton, Kellogg.
Would be really grateful if could know about my prospects for above mentioned MBA programs.
Thanks a lot!!
Warm greetings to you as well!
And thanks for dropping by,
So you have lots of good stuff going for you. The thing I like most (we're taming a detour here) is your leadership of a chapter of 130 people!!! Wow!!! Do you have any idea how few people have this much leadership going into Bschool??? VERY!
So it's awesome, and if this story doesn't find its way into every application, you are doing something wrong…
Other than that GMAT is great, work experience seems very solid. The only negative is your UG schooling - it's not at IIT and your grades could be higher. But it's not like it's a major weakness either.
Now although you have an excellent profile, I think you should probably expand your list to consider top 15 schools. Right now, you are basically aiming for top 5 only, and that's a bit risky, even with the most amazing profile. And its especially risky as an Indian candidate (sorry, not your fault, I know I know…). So by all means, apply to these five schools, but add at least one safe school (below 15) (MCombs would be a perfect safe school, as would Rice (which is lower ranked, but look at their insanely good Oil and Gas placement) ) and then one or two more in the lower half of the Top 15 which fit your goals.
Hope this makes sense and helps you out.
Best,
Jon
