Profile evaluation-- LOOKING FOR ADVISE [#permalink] New post 20 Feb 2013, 15:43
Hello everyone
I would like to present my profile and my target MBA programs and get some advise if it is advisable to apply.
Thanks in advance

Nationality: Mexican
Age: 25
GPA: 3.5
International Business Administration
Work experience: 2 years.
GMAT: 650
TOEFL IBT: 106

Porgrams of interest- FULL TIME MBA
-THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
-TCU (TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY)
- ROCHESTER UNIVERSITY
- RICE UNIVERSITY

I am interested in beginning my studies on the fall of 2014.
By that time I would have more working experience more than 3 years in total.

I would like to share some academic and professional information that may be relevant .

I lived during 1 year in England in order to improve my English. I attended to an English course my whole time there.
-FCE
-CAE I obtained both of the mentioned certificates in the English language

I know it is nothing impressive, but I would like to know if the universitites take into consideration if you have some academic international experience and received a certificate to prove that you were doing something productive during your time abroad.

I spent a summer in Alaska working in a cannery. I just wanted to make money , but it was an interesting experience.. It was an adventure.

University.
I spent 7 months in Germany as an exchange student in the university.
I combined my regular university courses in Germany with a german course there, I attended the Goethe institute and received the B-1 certificate in german.

-I made my professional practice in the custom administration in mexico for 6 months.
- Social service / internship : Economic development ministry/ state of Jalisco.. in the international promotion department during 8 months.

I graduated from the university in 2010 (December)
I wanted to improve my german a bit more and get another certificate so I spent 3 more months in germany taking herman classes everyday and got a B-2 german certificate.

After that I got a job in an American company in Mexico (PANDUIT) It was a new team that was created to give service to the sales worforce of the company.. It was not a really challenging job but it had some peculiarities.

- I provided my services to the European division based in London.. so I had to worked during the night in mexico from 2 AM to 10 AM.. I got this hob because I was able to speak german and provide my services to both the german speaking sales force and the english speaking one.

I worked there for a year, and then started working on the family business.. It is a small / medium size company.. the idea is that one day I will be the one in charge of running the company.. No need to say this is one of the main reasons I want to study, I want to be prepare for that day.
I have been rotating from one department to another in order to have a general idea of all the parts of the company.

I recently took the GMAT and got a 650.. I know is not an impressive score... specially when everyday I read posts of people getting 720 or more.. I am concern that I will have to improve my score a little bit more. I was hoping to get at least a 670, but I did not..

I am not interested in applying to the top schools, I am realistic and I want to improve my chances of being accepted in a decent and competitive program.

davidlf,

The fact that you are from Mexico, have strong international experiences, speak three languages, and are preparing to one day run your family's business are all strong qualifications that offset your so-so GMAT score. You will have no trouble getting into GWU or TCU and should be competitive at Rochester and Rice (your GMAT is not far from their medians). I might encourage to add a couple of 'stretch' schools to this list because I think you could get admitted to higher ranked schools. Feel free to send me your CV if you'd like me to take a closer look: paulbodine@yahoo.com.

I'm with Paul here that you have a lot of good stuff that might offset the GMAt. Plus your goals are veeeery reasonable. One thing I would like to know about more before evaluating is your family business - what field is it in?? How big? how many employees? what did you do? are you going to take it over???

Hello there, and thanks both for your answers..
The business is divided in 2 companies, both of them in the construction field.. 1 company works mainly for the government projects : roads, streets, bridged etc.
the 2nd one , is an asphalt plan, produce and sells asphalt and other related building material.

There are around 40 permanent employees..(office,warehouse,workshop,drivers,asphalt plant) and depending on the project the number of temporal workers varies greatly.

what field is it in?? How big? how many employees? what did you do? are you going to take it over???

I recently began working there and I am in charge of the fuels supply and administration.. I recently began working on the company. My other brothers are not working there, and they dont plan to work there. I am the only one involved in the company.
And the final goal is for me to take over the company ,, after knowing the company, getting work experience and study and mba.

Although the family business is not huge, it is nice and solid and I think they are relatively strong goals for the schools you are proposing. It makes sense to me that you should emphasize your family business and goals (it can also be an awesome source for PASSION in the essays) One more thing, I think you can also lean heavily on your international experience (the German stuff mostly) and actually I am quite curious about your work in the cannery (it makes seem totally irrelevant, but it is preeeetty unique.. I don't know how many other B-school candidates have such work behind them!)
Best of luck to you,
