Profile evaluation - Nonprofit Think Tank [#permalink] New post 02 Dec 2012, 11:17
Just took the GMAT yesterday and am not too pleased with my result. I'm reevaluating which schools to apply to, and I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

My profile
24 yr old white male

Education: 3.72, University of Wisconsin, Political Science, my only quant classes were Calculus and Analytic Geometry (B) and Accelerated Micro/Macro Econ (B)

GMAT: 640 (42Q, 39V) -- considering retaking at the end of the month (any advice on whether or not it's necessary?)

Work Experience: 2 years (will be 3 at matriculation) all at large, top-ranked nonprofit think tank; I am a program coordinator for two projects which focus on domestic economic and social policy (primarily anti-poverty policy and economic opportunity) and I manage an annual budget of over $800,000; I supervise one staff assistant and oversee the work of two research assistants; have been quickly promoted within the organization

Extracurricular: Ran large Model United Nations conference for high school students while in college (led a team of 40 volunteer staff members, piloted training program for urban high schools - taught public speaking and professional writing skills); participated in Model UN as a collegiate delegate (was awarded Best Delegate at national conference); Coordinated tutoring program for children for an ESL program in Milwaukee while in high school and college; co-captain of the volleyball team at my work

Goal: Strategic consulting for the public and nonprofit sectors (any advice on how make this career goal sound better?)

School I'm considering: Kellogg (super stretch); Columbia (super stretch again); Yale; Darden; Carnegie Mellon; Georgetown (any other suggestions?)

Hi, you have good work experience and ECs but to get into a top 10 school, you'll want to get your Gmat above 700, or at least above 650. As is, Kellogg, Columbia, Yale, and perhaps Darden would be stretches (depending how much emphasis Darden puts on Gmat score). If you want to apply without retaking, take a look at some schools that traditionally are more flexible when it comes to scores -- Duke, Michigan, Emory, UCLA, USC, UT Austin..
