Profile Evaluation Please. Low GPA 740 GMAT cleantech exp [#permalink] New post 03 Jan 2013, 18:01
Thinking about applying next fall. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on my chances and what I can do to improve my profile

WE: 4.5 yrs of full-time work experience by matriculation (class of '16) plus 4 internships (summer & pt during the school year)
First 2 years at a Fortune 50, largest energy services company by marketshare, leading small teams that designed energy conservation projects in buildings. Received a promotion after approximately 7 months with ~30% raise. Youngest person in new position by 5 years.
Poached by manager to join venture backed software start up that has developed algorithms to perform building energy audits remotely using utility data. One of the first 10-15 employees, wearing multiple hats in an engineering roll. Youngest employee at new company.

GMAT: 2nd Attempt-740 (48Q/44V, 6.0 AWA) , 1st Attempt-690 (6.0 AWA)

College: 2010 Boston University 2.8 GPA in my Mechanical Engineering. Earned concentrations in Energy Technologies and Environmental Engineering. Took grad level courses at Harvard Extension school in Stats and Finance, earned A's in both to show my commitment to grad school.

EC's: Undergrad - Energy Club, Engineers without Borders Post Grad- Started a community outreach group at my first company, raised money for homeless shelter, organized community service events

Certifications: Passed my FE exam (first step towards PE license), plan on getting CEM (Certified Energy Manager) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

Schools: Wharton, Sloan, Kellogg, Booth, Tuck, Haas, Columbia, Fuqua, Ross, Yale

Goals: Entrepreneurship or consulting

sorry to bug in but I liked your profile. But it seems you have selected the schools just on basis of rankings and omitted Harvard/stanford.

Just my 2 cents - research the schools first. Then look for the chances. Else you will realize later that following this step would have been more beneficial.

gurpreetsingh, happy to have you chime in. The more replies the merrier.

I actually have done quite a bit of research on the schools as I was planning on applying this fall but put it on hold to work with my start-up. In fact, I have even been to a Stanford event and work with a couple of HBS guys. While my coworkers encourage me to shoot for Stanford and HBS, I'm pretty gun shy due the GPA. From what I've read, Wharton may be a little more forgiving on it due to a unique career path.

That being said, my list of schools may conspicuously look like a long list of other top schools because I plan on applying to a little more than the recommended 5-6 school. While I certainly have preferences in that list, I realize that applying with a low gpa and a high gmat can be a bit of a crap shoot.

It is good you have researched but since you have omitted H/S just because of one reason, you should apply to both. You never know when almighty showers the blessings !!

Good luck !!
