Hi all,

I am hoping to get your advice on my chances to get into the top 10 US b-schools. Currently I am aiming for Stanford, Chicago, Ross, Haas and Fuqua.

Here is my profile:

Indian Male, 27

Undergraduate: BTech, Metallurgical Engg. (IIT Bombay)
Post graduate: MTech, Metallurgical Engg. (IIT Bombay)

GMAT : 760 (Q 50, V 42, AWA : 5)

GPA : 3.8/4

Consistent high-school performance: Got 90% in 10th std. and 91.2% in my 12th std.

Work Ex : 4 years post my undergrad degree

Quality of Work ex :
1. 4 yrs work ex. with McKinsey Knowledge Centre (A KPO firm providing analytical solutions to parent company McKinsey & Co.): Joined as an Analyst, and got promoted to a Senior Analyst within 3.3 yrs. Worked with Indian, European, Asian clients on carbon economics, energy efficiency and clean technology growth across the globe; published more than 3 articles internally so far on clean technologies
2. Leadership experience: Co-led a team of consultants for a carbon mitigation project; led a team of 2 analysts on an internal project; mentoring junior analysts and analysts for over a year now on several projects

International exposure :
1. 3 month research internship in a university in Manchester during my UG
2. More than 6 months of onsite work ex. (in the last 2.5 years) in Russia, Egypt, Taiwan, Germany, UAE and Austria for client work

Extra-currics: Play badminton, basketball and table tennis. Also, was in the state team for badminton in my high school. Represented my hostel in badminton during UG

I would really value your advise on the following two points:
1) Do I have a chance of getting admitted in a top 5 (Harvard, Stanford, MIT Sloan, Chicago, Kellogg)? If so, what are the things I can do to make my application stronger?
2) What are the other universities that I can look at, given my ambitions?

Thanks again!

Expert's post
Rahul-

With a well articulated vision for your future, one that demonstrates how you will leverage your past to achieve your goals in both the short term and long term, you should be competitive in the top 10. I say top 10 because there is really no difference in the top 10 schools in many ways, so to say top 5 can limiit yourself and cause some risk, since the acceptance rate goes down the higher up in the rankings you get. The truth is, if you are fortunate enough to be top 10 material, you will get the education and opportunities you need from any school in that category. The rankings change every year, so you should be about figuring which school is the best fit for you (culture, curriculum, environment, locale, personality, etc) and target those schools. Visiting them in person is the best way to ascertain this of course. By the way, if you need help specifically targeting these schools and/or help pulling your vision together for the applications, please let us know. We have graduates of all top schools on hand to offer advice, which could prove particularly valuable since you will be applying from a very competitive applicant pool (Male, India, Engineering). Best of luck!

Thanks a lot Bryant for the comments. It is very helpful. I have almost freezed on a career path in clean technologies post MBA thus leveraging both my technical engineering background and work experience.

Rahul
