As I am sure you can understand, there is not a "general" way that people can differentiate themselves. Each candidate needs to express his or her unique story.
Regarding the schools you are applying to, my one recommendation is that if you are seriously considering VC opportunities, that you look at schools in Northern California (Haas, Stanford). This is where the majority of the VC industry resides.
