Greetings everyone,
Long time lurker first time poster here, i'll try to keep this concise. I've done a fair amount of research into this topic but there's such a wealth of information it's hard to discern what's true/untrue, outdated, practical, etc. I feel that an answer to my specific question will grant a lot of people insight into a common situation, and everyone on these forums seem to be so knowledgable that I figured what better place to ask! So here we go:
Graduated from UCBerkeley 1 1/2 years ago with a degree in Global Communications & Legal Studies, (planned on attending law school throughout undergrad). It wasn't until my last year of schooling when all of my friends/fraternity brothers began to go into banking/consulting/business-related jobs and I got to see their career trajectory/paths that I became especially discontent with my decisions. I've since been independently tutoring the LSAT (law school admission test) as I spent so much time learning it, (plus it's paid very well). I have no significant/relevant business related internships over summers or previous employment, I have a cumm. GPA of about 3.3 in both majors, but desperately want to transition into business and start/change my anticipated career. I feel as if i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place not realizing these desires sooner.
So, my questions is, where do I go from here?
I'm not opposed to further education or anything that is necessary in helping me transition/show my worth. I'd like to find employment in consulting/banking but am open to other options as well. I've been looking into MiMsc programs abroad and here in the US (like Duke's), would that be a good route? If I took the GMAT and did well would I have a chance? Or what other options are available to someone like me at this point?
Thanks in advance for any help, greatly appreciated!
Hey there,
Well, the first question is a personal/philosophical one - about what you want to do. Just because your friends have what seem to be prestigious careers and make gobs of money is maybe not in of itself reason enough for you to follow their path. Just a thought I felt like I wanted to get out of the way.. but it's important.
If you ARE interesting in banking, then your first possibility is to do something like an MSF and then use that to shift over to that industry. The problem is now with timing. First two rounds are over, and you don't yet have your GMAT.
Another thoughts is that if you actually ARE happy with what you are doing, think about how you can take it a step further - meaning why not stick with LSAT tutoring if you like it? But maybe think about how to move beyond just working for immediate cash - but maybe you can get a good job with a big tutoring firm? Or, if you prefer, set up your own tutoring business? There are plenty of people making more money managing education companies than a dozen bankers put together.
What I'm trying to say is that you have lots of options. And it's good that you are thinking about this now, cause maybe it will bring you to some new idea or action... and the universe is a big place, my friend...
Feel free to write back with your thoughts,
Best,
Jon
