Profile evaluation - PT MBA [#permalink] New post 08 Aug 2013, 10:07
Hi,

I'm ONLY considering CBF (Chicago Business Fellows) program offered by Booth. It's a part time MBA program specifically for 0-3 years of experience young professionals who lives in Chicago, IL.

Here's my profile:

Taiwan citizen, male, 28y
BS in Computer Science from NCTU, a top engineering school in Taiwan, GPA 3.5, class rank: 1 out of 41
MS in IT - Information Security from Carnegie Mellon University, GPA 3.25

GRE - Taken in 2009. V440 Q800 AWA3.5

Work Experience:
1 year in Taiwan military: 2nd Lieutenant, Security Officer
(Entry level leadership role)
0.5 year in a start-up tech company in Silicon Valley: IT Security Engineer, 80K/y
(Mostly engineering tasks)
1 year in a big, international tech (Internet) company in Silicon Valley: Security Solutions Architect (Current job), 115K/y
(Blended with engineering, consulting, project management. Providing solutions based on company products.)

Several IT Certifications including CCNP Security, CCDP, ITIL v3 Foundation, MCSE Security, BS7799 ISMS Lead Auditor, Project+
Will obtain Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification by the time of the application

Captain in departmental basketball team in college
Microsoft Student Ambassador, Microsoft Technology Club in college
Volunteer: Technical support in Intel Developer's Forum in Taipei
Volunteer: Mandarin-English Interpreter in US Education Fair in Taipei (7 times)

Why MBA: As a technical guy, I've seen many opportunities which are potentially profitable, as well as beneficial to the customers, within my past companies and current company. However, I failed to further analyze and promote the ideas because did not know how to speak "business language".

Post-MBA Short Term Goals: To promote entrepreneurial ideas within current company. To learn skills of managing technical projects successfully.

Long Term Goals: Work in a strategic role in a tech environment. Be able to successfully create business/life value through tech entrepreneurship and help other people.

Frankly I haven't seen data on the Chicago Business Fellows and have little experience upon which to express an opinion. However, I am concerned about your CMU GPA and your verbal score. They could both be red flags for Booth and significant obstacles. Everything else looks good.

Regards,
Linda
