Profile Evaluation Request [#permalink] New post 06 Jul 2011, 18:08
I took the GMAT for the first time a couple weeks ago and would love some opinions on my profile. I have an undergrad GPA of 2.75, a 680 on the GMAT, 3 years of relevant work experience, and, in my opinion, strong intangibles (good recommendations, a strong "story"). I'm interested in small business/entrepreneurial programs and have been looking at the following schools so far:

Schulich (York U)
Rotman (U of Toronto)
Haas
Anderson
Kellogg

The two questions that I would love to hear your opinions on are:

1. What are my chances of getting into either of the Toronto schools right now?
2. Clearly the US schools are a reach at this point. What do you think I would need to raise my GMAT to in order to have a serious chance at these schools?

Any advice/words of wisdom you have is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello jackel414, thanks for your question.

My knowledge of the Toronto programs is not as deep as of US programs. Can you refresh my memory on what the GMAT and GPA averages are for those schools?

Typically, for top US programs, a 700 is the target, with at least 80% for verbal and quantitative sections. How close are your individual scores to 80%? Your GPA is on the low side, so my fear is that you’d be applying with two challenges to overcome. In that case, to have a shot at Haas, Anderson, and Kellogg, you might have to raise your GMAT to those target levels, so you’re only dealing with the GPA challenge. On that note, do you have a mitigating circumstance that explains the 2.75? If so, I encourage you to write an optional essay that explains the situation or, even better, puts forth another reference point that better represents your academic aptitude and potential.

You might look to your work and extracurricular experience to differentiate yourself. If you can represent yourself as a dynamic leader – one who takes initiative, solves problems, and drives results – you can potentially overcome the GPA challenge.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck!
Brian

Thanks for the response Brian, that's helpful. The average GMAT score for both of the Toronto schools is around 660, based on what I've read. I'm not sure about the average undergraduate GPA. My verbal GMAT score is in the 89 percentile, but my quantitative is in the 68th. I think I'll definitely have to raise it in order to have a shot at any of the US schools on my list.

Thanks for you help!

No problem - I'm happy to answer more questions, should they arise.

Best,
Brian
