Profile Evaluation Request [#permalink] New post 05 May 2013, 06:46
Thanks in advance for taking out the time to evaluate my profile and answering my questions.

I am from India / 24 / Male. Currently I am working as a Field Engineer for Schlumberger in middle east and wish to apply to business schools in 2014 when I will have 3 years of work experience at the time of applying.

Description of full time work experience
Hardcore technical operations in upstream oil industry. I have to lead multi national crews of 6-7 people to conduct data acquisition operations on oil rigs. It is a high pressure job and long hours to the tune of 40-50 are pretty regular.
- Supervise and manage these projects on rigs where each can bring in a revenue of anywhere between a few thousand upto a million dollars for the company in 2-3 days.
- Two promotions by the time I apply.
- International work ex. from the start.
- Selected for doing month long offshore stints in India for high profile operations.

GMAT - 720 V-38 Q-50

Undergrad - IIT-B, CPI - 7.6/10 (turns out to be around 3 GPA).

Extra Curriculars
- Significant leadership experiences during college. Elected student leader. Nothing much while working.

Post MBA
top tier consulting firms or general management in global energy companies.

Target programs
Intend to get into top 10 in US or INSEAD/LBS.

Questions
1) 3 years of work experience at the time of applying seems less than average for most schools. Will I be at a disadvantage because of it.
2) Should i retake GMAT with 720. Will it be looked upon as a negative if i end up with a lower score than what i took earlier.
3) What should be my Target schools in US considering my background. Is Top 10 in US feasible considering my background ?

Retaking the GMAT with a 720 would not be advisable--no reason why an additional 10 or 20 points would make more than a marginal difference particularly in the Indian applicant pool, where good scores are expected and you certainly can check that box. Plus b--schools love engineers :)

While they are not generally in the top 10, you might consider schools in Texas due to your energy focus. Fuqua at Duke also has a new energy program, and Fuqua is solidly in the top 10. Your work experience, while briefer than some schools' averages, sounds very robust and also unique. For this reason and also due to the fact you actually lead others at work, I would say it is not at all a negative to have "only" three years. I would definitely go ahead and apply if it makes sense for you to do so in your career plans. Just make sure you can articulate why now is best for you and you will be fine. If there are other schools to which you are attracted in the top tier, I would say go for them as well. I don't see anything on the surface that would keep you from applying to anywhere you feel you have a good fit with the school's curriculum and culture. I particularly like your unique work experience and feel it would help you be remembered--an important feat when applying from India.
