Hi mbaMission Team,
Could someone evaluate my profile and let me know my chances on an MBA?

Bio : Indian / F/ 27
Work -ex: 4+
Industry : Aerospace, Automotive, Health Sector
Entrepreneurship experience : 1 yr in Health Sector
Technology : IT
GMAT : 690
Academic : 10th - 93.5 %, 12th - 96.5% B.Tech - 8.5/10
Achievements: Awards on Shuttle Badminton, best performer awards at work, active participation in debates and literary events, emceed events, organized various celebrations in office.
EC-Activities: Veena Player, Shuttle Badminton, Professional Baking
Community Service: Teaching "Spoken English" for govt. schools and "Story telling sessions" for kindergarten children, environmental awareness sessions in schools.

I am currently in a sabbatical in my career for obvious familial reasons. I want to know how good/bad is my profile. How will the break in my career affect my chances?
I am basically targeting schools in Canada.

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. Your profile sounds familiar, not sure if we've chatted elsewhere ;), but in any case I would say overall your profile is strong. First of all b-schools are always looking for qualified female applicants. Not sure what your role is, but the aerospace/health etc industry experience is interesting and potentially a lot you can draw from to contribute to your essays and in class, and the entrepreneurship experience and other involvements are great too. I would think you have good chances for Canadian programs. In terms of the career break, I assume you mean for having children? ;) Which is certainly explainable. Generally you just need to explain anything you think might be questioned within your profile/ experience.

Thanks for your time! And no, I don't think we have interacted before. Anyway, I am glad we did now! :) I must tell you, whatever you said is kind of a great boost to my self-confidence. I was extremely worried about the break. And yes, you guessed it right! It is for my child. I hope to cash on my experience as much as it sounds on the paper. Is my GMAT good enough? I also want to know what US schools I could apply to. As an after thought, I think US is also a better option! :)

I would be so glad if you could assist me with the same. And I am so sorry I was late in replying!

Hi Janani,

No problem, you are welcome, happy to help. 3 questions that might shed a little more light would be 1) what is your actual role/roles held in these industries? 2) how long has your break been? 3) What are your post-MBA goals?

A 690 is strong and should work for most Canadian b-schools. For US schools, the top 10 will be challenging to get into, but beyond that you should have a decent shot (as per US News rankings, https://premium.usnews.com/best-graduate ... a-rankings). It really depends on what you are looking for in a school... a lot of factors to consider, and your own personal goals are an important consideration.

1) I was into technology development in these domains. During my stint in Auto domain, I have also had some experience to lead a small team of 2. I was a partner at a fitness studio start up and was handling all the admin roles in addition to marketing.
2) I have a break of about 6 months until now, from April.
3) Post-MBA I would like to get into Operations/Strategy.
I would like to apply to UCLA Anderson now. What other US schools that I could consider?

Gotcha!

Well re: the career break, I assume taking that much time off is common in your country? You may just mention that but generally I'd think admissions would understand ;). Just different from the US where 6 weeks maternity leave is often common, crazy huh.

So just be sure you focus a lot on skills BEYOND IT/technical skills.. leadership, managing the team, the fitness business, teamwork, influencing others, communication skills, etc.... as the technical side of you is a given. ;) You want to stand out among IT applicants.

UCLA Anderson will be a reach, but not impossible. ;) Other programs that are known for operations, and maybe worth researching, include Tepper, Ross, McCombs, Krannert, Kelley, Scheller.
