Hi,

I would love to get your perspective on where I stand.

-27 y/o Indian Male (will turn 28 in may)

-GMAT 710 (49Q, 39V)

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree.

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs so moved back.

-working in the business development and strategy implementation division of a firm with interests across hydropower, textiles and education and annual revenues of over $100m. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The project is at an advanced stage of implementation and the financial rewards from the project have already started flowing in. The idea for diversification was my brainchild and thus I was made the team leader of the project. I'm also the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role. I've held leadership roles across all the 3 verticals.

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm and work in new geographies (outside of India). Long term goal is to take up a senior management role at a fortune 500 firm. In my current role I'm coming up with and executing ideas that lead to improvement in business process and create value for the firm. I think a career in consulting will be a reasonable sell as my STG.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Have been closely associated with environmental research over the last 4 years. Having lost my father to blood cancer I started a cancer foundation in his name and have raised over INR 1.5m which in turn was used to help underprivileged patients in their treatment. Also organize an annual blood donation camp. Also redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy. I've also worked for a member of parliament from 2009-2013 on devising a plan for development in the members parliamentary constituency.

-Target schools- INSEAD's definitely my dream school. I don't have international work experience but I'm hoping that the fact the I studied abroad for 3 years and that my extenuating circumstances made me move back to India will help with my application at Insead.

-Besides Insead I'd like to find out which other schools I can apply to?

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. And so sorry to hear of your father's passing. It sounds like that has understandably made a large impact on your life and choices.

With regard to your profile, some of the strengths that come through include:

-study/living abroad experience
-varied work experience with exposure to several industries; promotion and recognition on the job
-you've demonstrated initiative with the suggestion for diversification which was then implemented
-clear examples of leadership, and specific professional contributions that led to tangible results
-your community experience and dedication are quite strong, particularly the cancer foundation you've established and your results there (and your personal interest in it and passion for it of course)

No glaring weaknesses are coming across; your GMAT and grades are solid though not outstanding. It sounds like you are quite passionate about INSEAD, so the more you can do to demonstrate that passion and connection with the school, the better. If you haven't yet, I'd get in touch with some current students and/or alumni (if you don't know anyone, you can always ask admissions to put you in touch with some). Dig deep into what their experience has been like and try to really get a feel of the student culture and overall experience that you can draw from even in your essays and interviews. Visit if at all possible, or at least go to info sessions, read student blogs, learn as much as you can and then show why you feel that school is the most ideal for you in your application.

When you ask what other schools you could apply to... it really depends on what sort of criteria you are looking for in a school...they can vary a lot, everything from what country/culture you are looking for; length of program; curriculum structure; employment stats; class size, and more. Hi Jen,

Thank you so much for taking out time and providing such and in-depth reply.

I am in touch with a current Insead student as well as a recent alumni. I wont be able to attend an info session as Inseads not having one in India but I have attended a couple of their online sessions (will that count). Also I'm visiting Insead in early May but that will be after having submitted my application on the 22nd of April.

I'm mostly interested in applying to US business schools along with maybe a couple of good ones in Europe (insead, lbs, hec paris). Some of the important criteria's for me are employment stats for international students (particularyl in consulting), alumni network and the brand recognition of the B-School itself. I'm not overly concerned with other criteria's.

I'm also looking at applying to certain schools for the 2016 Jan intake (Insead, HEC, Columbia)

I was wondering if you could provide me with an evaluation of odds at the following schools-

LBS, Columbia, Kellogg, MIT, Tuck, NYU, Duke, Emory and Olin

Please feel free to suggest other suitable schools.

Hi again,

Thanks for the updates. Yes it's great to gain as much exposure to the school as you can, and to speak with students and alum in order to get a more subjective 'feel' for the student body and class and campus culture. This is not only beneficial to you personally but can help you speak with more authority on your apps and in your interview about what you like about the program specifically.

Tough to give "odds" per se at given schools since the admissions process is so holistic and the admissions committee will be looking at the entire package of what you put together and of your profile etc, which of course I do not have access to ;), plus there is always an element of subjectivity involved (i.e. admissions is not formulaic per se), and it also depends upon your competition at a given school in a given season etc. To go a bit deeper and have us review your resume and have some q-and-a, fyi we do offer free 30 minute consultation options at https://shop.mbamission.com/collections/insider-s-guides if interested. Anyway based on limited info here I think the top 10 or so will be a bit of a reach, but not necessarily impossible.... for better odds of getting in somewhere you can apply to a couple of schools in different tiers so to speak, while still ensuring they are schools you would be happy at.
