Hi,
Hi sophistikate, You sound like you have a lot that will appeal at top programs and this work you are doing in Asia could be an interesting story to tell if it plays out the way you hope.I'm currently a 22 year old Asian male seeking admission to the top 5 business schools (hopefully HBS) in several years. Here are my qualifications:
-750 GMAT (48Q, 44V, 8 IR, 6.0 AWA) - the computer froze at the end of the math section so I'm confident it could have been a 770 because I always got 51 or 50 on practice tests and I studied engineering in college so they shouldn't doubt my quantitative skills
-3.6 GPA in Electrical Engineering (one of the hardest majors at my school) from Duke
-Worked 1 year as a consultant for a software company but really didn't enjoy the work and am quitting very soon (high starting salary, high turnover at this company)
-Starting a company in Asia with a buddy of mine who recently graduated from Harvard that is one of those SAT Prep/College Consulting gigs (very lucrative in large Asian cities right now)
Our plan is to build this business for 3-5 years and then potentially IPO and sell it, cash out, and come back to the States to attend a top business school. We're pretty confident we'll make the business work and have several hundred thousands in Venture Capital funding already. Because I'm very young right now, I would like advice on how to best position myself for maximum chance at a top business school. I know my career path is a bit non-traditional so I would like advice on how to proceed in these next few years and build a wonderful story.
The advice is- be authentic in this- as you are working on your venture keep in mind how to show impact. You are venturing off course in leaving the multinational work world- if you can at least have a year at the software firm and try to have some kind of results there- that will help you in long run. Do as much as you can now while still at the company so that your story reads as not someone who didn't like corporate America- but that you did well in first job, then wanted to see entrepreneurial side- spent 3 yrs building a business- sold it and now want to learn more in formal business environment. You are wise to think about how your story will play out- there is some risk in leaving corporate mold- but more of your peers also are doing this so less unconventional than in years past. But do try to make sure you have some accomplishments in current work before cutting the cord- because you do want that corporate experience to be good as the foundation of your work experience. We do offer a profile development package where we work with candidates a year or more before B school on an hourly basis and really evaluate all aspects of how they will present and make a plan for how to shine in every area. This could be useful in your situation. You can get a free consult at our website stratusprep.com if you'd like. Best of luck on what sounds like an interesting adventure! Thanks!
