You should have a decent enough shot at any of the top 8 schools -- assuming your GMAT is in range (bare minimum 680, and ideally above 700).
For US military officers, you don't need civilian/business experience to be competitive for b-school. However, if you have the opportunity, it can certainly help you in that transition from military life to the business world (and can also help you in recruiting to some extent - showing that you have some civilian experience). But again, it's not necessary, as most US military folks typically go to b-school straight from the military, and they seem to do just fine in b-school and in the MBA recruiting process.
For now, just focus on the GMAT - do whatever it takes to make sure your score is strong. If you can do that, then you should be in a decent position for any of the top 8 schools (including HBS, Wharton, Stanford, etc.).
