Profile evaluation request - chances at the top 10 bschools [#permalink] New post 09 Aug 2010, 05:46
Hello,

I'm a prospective applicant for a 2-year MBA starting Fall 2011. I was hoping to get your inputs on what my chances are at the top 10 bschools and which schools can i target with my profile.

I'm looking at a career in Strategy Consulting in the Technology domain post my MBA, and in time move into Private Equity/Venture Capital in the Cleantech and Emerging technologies domain.

24/M Indian, currently have 2 years work-ex (3 years at matriculation) as a Jr analyst in the IB arm of a top tier Investment Bank (bulge bracket), and have basically handled projects dealing with financial advisory on M&A and capital raising opportunities for clients in the financial institutions sector. I was one of the 5 engineers from a batch of 400 to have been selected in the IB division... and part of the 1st batch of engineering recruits in the firm - post which the dept has actively gone ahead and recruited more engineers from my college (volunteered in the recruitment drive as well). In my two years so far, I have had diverse experience having worked with colleagues in New York (remotely + a stint in NY) handling M&A and equity raising projects for the US banking sector and with colleagues in HK/Singapore (remotely) working on projects pertaining to the Asian debt capital markets. Further have actively taken part in various department-wide initiatives (Speaker sessions, Sports, Quiz, etc), and also unofficially led a team of 4 members when pitching a multi-million dollar revenue generating idea to senior management at the Investment bank as a part of another dept initiative, youngest employee in the dept to do so

Education:

Bachelor in Engineering (Electronics), graduated from a Top tier University in India in 2008 with highest honours (First Class with Distinction, 70.2%) (equivalent GPA of about 3.5)
GMAT - 760 (Q51, V41, AWA 5.5)
Additional courses - CFA Level 1 cleared with highest grades in all subjects

In terms of my co-curricular and extra-curricular activities,

- I have a 4-year association with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), a nonprofit organization that helps budding entrepreneurs launch their businesses and mentors the youth on entrepreneurship. Currently, I'm a part of the Leadership council of NEN E-club Mumbai Chapter.

- Additionally, I'm associated with a local NGO supporting underprivileged children and have taken initiative in mentoring the children
- Am also a part of the local chapter of Lions Club International. (Although both these activities have been recent in 2010)

- Was very active in college co-curricular activities and held several leaderhip positions in different student bodies (not sure how relevant that will be though)

I would greatly appreciate your inputs on this and your assessment would go a long way in helping me decide which schools to target with my profile.

Thanks and Regards,
Ankur

Hello,

Your work experience sounds very impressive, so at first glance I'm optimistic about your chances of getting into a top-ten MBA program. Just a couple of thoughts:

- Your extracurricular involvement sounds good, but not amazing. Not that it NEEDS to be amazing for you to get into one of these schools, but you mention a lot of "being associated" with certain NGOs... As much as possible, you want to show that you're a leader in these groups and that you've made a positive impact on them, not just that you've been a member or have attended meetings.

- Your post-MBA career goals are fine, although I wonder if going straight into finance would make more sense for you. This isn't the best reason to make such an important decision, but I worry a little that when admissions officers see "Male / Indian / Engineer" and then see "I want to do tech consulting" they'll just lump you into that very competitive applicant pool. You already have great finance/banking experience... I'd really play that up in your application, even in your post-MBA career goals.

- Where you should apply partly depends on what you do re: the point above, but I think you will at least be competitive at top-ten schools, and maybe at top-five schools assuming things go your way.

Good luck!
Scott

Thanks for your valuable inputs, Scott.

Regarding some of the points you mentioned -

- Your extracurricular involvement sounds good, but not amazing. Not that it NEEDS to be amazing for you to get into one of these schools, but you mention a lot of "being associated" with certain NGOs... As much as possible, you want to show that you're a leader in these groups and that you've made a positive impact on them, not just that you've been a member or have attended meetings.

I have served in a leadership capacity with NEN in the past, and am currently part of of the leadership team that heads the Mumbai Chapter of the Entrepreneurship, so will make sure to highlight these leadership experiences within NEN.

Also I back in engineering college I've led a 200 member student contingent for industrial visits to 3 cities, was the Vice-chairman of the 250 member strong IEEE student society.. and an Exec Director of Entrepreneurship Cell back in college (started my association with NEN). I'm just wondering whether I'll be able to leverage these leadership experiences from college in my application? (considering the schools tend to look at profession/work related leadership experiences)

Your post-MBA career goals are fine, although I wonder if going straight into finance would make more sense for you.

I've been pondering on this for a while now.. whether to go with finance or technology as my post mba career goal ... and i'm not quite sure on how to frame the story... basically i'm looking to enter the PE/VC space which has a tech focus (emerging technologies -- not IT though, more on electronics and communication), but I want to gain some sector expertise working with a strategy consulting firm, get more exposure to the operational side of these businesses. And which is why i was looking to target the likes of Stanford, Berkeley Haas, MIT specifically.

Now obviously I would love to take a crack at the Columbias, Harvards and Kelloggs of the world as well... just not sure if I should stick to my tech theme here or finance..

How do applicants with strategy consulting or PE/VC as their long term goal, typically position their themes? Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.

Thanks a bunch!

It truly depends on the applicant and the school. The more that this is consistent with an applicant's background, the less the applicant has to do to convince the admissions office that he can make this move. If it's a big career change for the applicant (particularly with PE/VC-type jobs), then the applicant needs to demonstrate that he "gets" the indyustry and has a realistic plan for moving into it. That's a small, tough-to-break-into space for many grads, so demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry (e.g., maybe demonstrating how you have crossed paths with some VCs in your career) goes a long way towards answering this question!

Thanks Scott. Does it make sense for an adcom to see an IB analyst wanting to move into Strategy consulting and later PE/VC? Is it common or unheard of : move from IB to consulting?

Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Oh no, this isn't a weird move at all. You're going from one tough industry to get into to another. As long as your reasons are clear and believable, I think it will be okay!
