Hi,
Thanks for reviewing my profile. I am looking for 2017 entry.
Indian Male, 29
Undergrad: Top 10 undergrad business school in the US; Major: Finance; GPA-3.4
Grad school: Master's in Finance program from a top 15 national university; GPA-3.6
GMAT: 700
Work Experience: 5 yrs at an operations focused venture capital firm based in Hong Kong. I was the 1st employee of the firm. I started as an Analyst, was promoted to Associate after 4 months and then promoted to Senior Associate in an year. I held the position of Senior Associate for 2 years. Now I am a Principal, I supervise two analysts and 2 associate in the VC and more 60 employees in the portfolio firms. My role on the finance side is to source and conduct due diligence on deals. But as we are operationally focussed, I do have a lot of operational responsibilities like doing budgets, drawing up business plans, recruiting, and sales. From time to time, I worked full time for these portfolio companies on sales/operational issues. I would say I have spend about 1 year out of those 5 at the firm working very closely with/for senior management (C-level) of portfolio firms. Successfully completed sale of three portfolio companies to major MNCs. (Value: USD250mm)
I am having some issues at my current firm and thinking about a change of sceneries. MBA would provide an additional branding opportunity and maybe post MBA opportunity for a Tier 1 VC or Tier 1 start-up.
Schools I am looking at are:
Harvard, Stanford, Kellogg (1-year), INSEAD, Haas
What would you think chances are? Thanks.
Hey there,
Well overall I like your story a lot. You are in a great industry, and have some really unique experience, going from scratch to where you are now. Your grades are very good, and if you have a few extras I think you should do well in Top 10. The only thing is for an HK applicant your GMAT is about 30/40 points lower than it should be. Can you still get into a great school with a 700? Maybe, I'd need more detail on your profile... but with a 740 it will always be easier
The other thing is that presumably you have goals to continue in your industry... there are plenty of other great schools: Wharton, NYU, LBS, Oxbridge that can help you get to them, and I didn't entirely get your school list. But once again, this is something we can talk about further,
If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask!!!!
Best,
Jon
