Profile Evaluation Request - International Applicant [#permalink] New post 19 Jan 2012, 21:36
Hello,

I was wondering if you could kindly evaluate my chances on the basis of the following profile:

Age: 28
Nationality: Italian

Education: BSc in Aerospace Engineering, cum laude; GPA equivalent: 4.0 (final), 3.8 (overall). Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy).
GMAT: just taken once last december, 740, 47Q 44V (pretty sure I can do significantly better on Q)

Relevant Work Experience: Intern at Top MC (M/B/B) with strong recos; then 3+ years in a small engineering consulting firm in Italy working in renewable energy (wind and solar plants) for world leading energy companies, entering as a junior partner and afterwards promoted until becoming partner and general manager, coordinating a 12 people team, taking care of business development and project management. In the meantime, acted as entrepreneur too founding, developing and eventually selling some green energy start-ups.

Extracurricular: co-founder of a small classic car racing team, co-founder of a local youth charitable organization

Short term Post MBA Target: Management Consulting, hopefully at the same company I had my experience into. In Europe or US.

MBA Target Programs: MIT Sloan, Columbia, INSEAD, and of course H/W/S

I already applied for MIT R2, I plan to apply for J-term 2013 at Columbia and INSEAD. As for H/W/S, I am aware that international applicants are usually discouraged to apply R3: nevertheless I was evaluating this option as I fear that waiting for next R1 could be too late (for my age).

Thanks in advance,

Best

Hello 904carrera, thanks for your question.

Your GMAT is fine, but if you could bump up your quantitative score to 80% or higher, that would be safer.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a mistake to apply R3 to the top three programs, as long as you know that it is a long shot at those programs and that you might have to turn around in a few months and tackle reapplications (and report on what is different about your candidacy from the last time you applied). Sometimes, if you haven’t had a promotion or acquired new responsibilities, it can be tough to speak to what is different about your candidacy.

One question I’d make sure to answer clearly and definitely is: Why exactly do you need an MBA? And, I would answer specifically, not broadly. Demonstrate to the admissions committees that your desired career path necessitates an MBA. Identify the specific gaps that stand between you and your short- and long-term goals (knowledge, skills, experiences, network, etc.) and show how business school would directly address those gaps.

I hope this helps!

Best of luck,
Brian
