Profile Evaluation Request: Tunnel Engineer from Belarus [#permalink] New post 12 Jan 2014, 09:12
Hi! My name is Pavel and I would be really grateful for a profile evaluation.
I’d like to know my chances at getting into Insead and please shortlist other schools where I might be a good fit.
Thank you so much in advance.

Intend to apply for the 2015 intake.
Demographics: 26 by matriculation/Male/Belarusian

GRE: V165, Q166 (ETS conversion tool says it corresponds to GMAT 740, V41, Q48)
IELTS: 8.0

Work experience:
4 years (by matriculation) as a Structural Engineer, then Structural Engineer II (tunnels and underground structures) at a specialized medium-sized engineering consultancy with projects across the CIS region. Promoted before meeting experience requirements, partially developed national guidelines on a specific type of structural calculations, worked on a regional record-setting project.

3 years (by matriculation) as an individual member of a National Tunneling Association. Work there as an unpaid translator/interpreter. Many conference visits across the globe and much contact with senior executives, domestic and international. Obtained some privileges from EU embassies for the Association members, since our Association is a part of the International Tunneling Association.

Currently on the employment roster at the United Nations Secretariat after having passed their Young Professionals Program 2012 (pass rate ca. 2%) in the job family of Architecture.

Leading national technical University.
Specialist Degree (5 years) with Distinction.
Major in Civil Engineering.
GPA 9.13/10 (corresponds to GPA 3.57/4).
1st and 2nd places at two subject student city competitions, extracurricular scientific activity, a publication.

Organized an English conversation club at work.
Have leading roles in annual amateur performances at work.
Entered quarter-final of the largest business-case championship in the CIS region with a team I have formed. (not sure I should mention it since this is hardly a success)
Speak 4 languages fluently + 1 at a business level.
Participated 3 times in academic exchange programs with Germany during high schools (duration 4-6 weeks).

Short-term goal: management consulting in the Eastern Europe region.
Long-term goal: contributing to the development of business education in Belarus, with an ultimate goal of founding a business school here and leading it to regional prominence.

Target schools: Insead (main target), thinking of others.

Hello Pavel,

I consider you a strong candidate for INSEAD. This conclusion considers all the factors – academics/tests, career specifics, and additional activities. I say “strong” because not only are you well qualified, but you also represent an unusual segment of engineering – this helps to mitigate the fact that people with technical backgrounds tend to be over-represented.

While you are a potentially strong candidate for INSEAD, it’s still a reasonable reach – because it is for everybody. So you should prepare a stellar application. Also, while the GRE is accepted and your score is strong, adcoms still are more comfortable with the GMAT, so if you can do that test and score well, it would further strengthen the application (though, it’s not worth pursuing if it would take too much time/effort, because you’re well-qualified without it).

Other programs in Europe to consider would be IMD, LBS, and IE.
