hi
I have been following your blog very closely for the last couple of months. The information you provide is extremely helpful to all the MBA aspirants.
I was wondering if you could comment on my profile and address on the areas of weakness.I do understand that the AdCom looks at a complete profile instaed of certain areas but any comment from your side would be helpful.
I am F/28.I obtained my bachelors in Engg from India and Masters in bioengineering from Louisiana .GPA > 3.8 for both degrees.
I have been working for over 4.5 years (not considering my work as Research assistant during my masters)now in biotech sector specifially in drug development for neurodegenative disease namely Lou Gehrig's disease.I have a research publication in a high impact scintific journal and also a couple of conference presentations. Also the compay has been able to raise more tah $15M and is moving into clinical trials based on the data of my research.
Though I enjoy what i do I am very keen to move into buisness deveopment in biotech .Learn how companies survive , make decision s about M&A, licensing compounds ( since pharma/ biotech is one of the most challenging industries with ). My long term goal is working in VC company, which fund other startup biotech companies.
Its very difficult to achieve any of this without an MBA.
I have been very active in various extracurricular activities.i love taeching and help kids with SAT prep.i teach 1-1 and also associated with various tutoring centers. i am also very active with the bayarea chapter of ASHA,an organisation helping underpriviledged children in India.
My husband and my self are also an integral part of a school in India which was started by a family freind of ours.We do organise various fundraisers for the school.
I am also a part of the cancer society and help organise various events, raise funds, train volunteers etc.
While in Louisiana I organised swim camps for obese children to help them get into a to healthy lifestyle.
I am an animal volunteer and I do work with a group of friends taking care of homeless animals.
Where do you thnk i should apply?I live in the bayarea so i would ideally wnat to apply to Haas part time and UCLA parttime.
BTW my GMAT was pretty average 680 ...i dont thnk i have a chance to it take it again as all the deadlines are fast approaching...
Thanks a lot
Joey,
Given your location preferences, your options are not huge, but Haas PT and UCLA PT make sense. You might also consider USC FT, UC San Diego FT, and UC Irvine FT. UCSD's business school is new but SD is a biotech hotbed, and UC Irvine has a respected MBA known for its strength in technology. You have a good profile with a strong community involvement and a good GMAT. You will want to emphasize your leadership in your essays since adcoms may want to pigeonhole you as a non-leading lab researcher type. I wouldn't be shocked if Haas or UCLA admitted you but they are on the longshot side IMO.
Good luck,
