Profile Evaluation (UK MBA) Please Help! [#permalink] New post 25 Sep 2007, 07:58
Hello,
I was wondering if someone could provide some input regarding my chances of gaining admission into the following schools: Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. My profile is as follows:
Education:
-Finance Undergrad-University of Central Missouri, 4.0 finance GPA, 3.65 Cumulative GPA
-Held presidency of several student organizations, scholarships, etc
-Could obtain recommendation from Econ & Finance Dept. Chair
Work Experience:
-4 years with Bank of America, Private Wealth Mang. Division
-1st 10 Months, worked as an analyst
-remainder, was promoted early to Assistant VP and made Portfolio Manager, managing $100million+ investment portfolios
-Excellent Reviews, etc
GMAT: 650
Additional:
-Passed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst exam (CFA) and will receive charter shortly.
-Member of the CFA Institute and the Kansas City CFA society
Long-term Goals:
Plan on leveraging my MBA to gain management/Director positions with Bank of America or similiar companies.

Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

You look very good on paper. I would try to take the GMAT again and make that 680+, but only if you have the time and energy left to do so! 650 is a respectable score (and would get you into your choices), but if you think you can do better, I would try to aim for the best score I can get.

Do you have an international experience? Speak another foreign language? "Internationalism" is major characteristic that I have found in my research about international MBA programs. (By the way, I'm American, but live overseas in Germany.)

Bottom line, you'll ultimately need to distinguish yourself in some way from all the other applicants. There a lot of applicants with a similar profile, so your objective is to sell yourself better than the rest of the applicant pool.

Just my .02.

I am also applying to UK MBA programs, with my top 2 being Oxford and Cambridge. Also looking at Cranfield, Cass, Tanaka/Imperial.

I was thinking about Manchester, but realized their program is 18 months. I only want to do a 1 year, so it didn't make the cut for me.

All the best in your MBA pursuit,

William

Trader,
thanks for your reply. I actually don't have any international experience and I can only speak basic Russian. Given my current credentials, do you see any areas to improve (besides GMAT) or any areas that I'm lacking? Also, you wouldn't happen to know where I can find information (profiles) on successful MBA candidates (work exp., undergrad schools, etc.) for the UK's top ten programs, would you? Thanks and good luck with your top choices.

I would work really hard on your essays, and try to write something very original. Do you have any team-leading experience? If so, you will need to represent that somewhere in the resume/CV. First step, is to get that interview offer.

Once you get to the interview stage, you're going to be asked some questions that will require some thought and articulation. I would practice mock interviews with someone who will really grill you. Why Oxford? What can you offer to the rest of the class of '09?

These are just some tips I'm picking up from all my research. Here are some links that may help aid you in the UK MBA application process (the wonders of google!):
