Hi there!

Could you please provide me with an evaluation of my profile. I am applying to a 1-year MBA program at Cornell and Kellogg and need to assess my chances to get admitted.

Italian national, born in 1979 (32 years old).
Undergraduate: Economics, well regarded Italian university, GPA 3.9, graduated summa cum laude. One year exchange program in the UK.
Postgraduate: Master in financial mathematics, well regarded Italian university, GPA 3.6, graduated with A - from E (lowest) to A

Work experience: 4 years in investment banking (bulge bracket American bank) in London plus 3 years in real estate private equity in Italy. Good career progression, from analyst to associate and ultimately vice president with increased responsibility. Worked in London, Rome and Milan. Strong deal execution and exposure.

FSA level II.

GMAT: 680, 85% (V39, 87% / M 44, 66%), AWA 5.0. One attempt only, will not retake it.
Main disappointment is on the math section of my GMAT (somehow I screwed it), hopefully this can be offset by my strong GPA and my quantitative background both at school and at work.

Extracurricular: in the past a lot of sport (played volleyball for many years), student associations etc. In the recent past, a bit of volunteering and hobbies/sport, but nothing amazing. Unfortunately my workload does not give me the time to get seriously involved in other things.

Reason to apply: wanted to do it a couple of years ago but cost-opportunity was too high. Now, with financial markets down and very low expectations for the next couple of years, better timing to do it. Also, Italy and real estate are both badly affected. MBA from a reputed US school would give me the chance to get back to other job markets/finance segments (not a career changer though).

Many thanks in advance!

Hi gioravelli,

You have a strong candidacy. The one thing I want to emphasize is the importance of not underestimating the impact of your recommendations and personal essays. For your recommendations, you should be hands on the process to make sure that the recommendations reflect the aspects you would like in your application.

Here are program specific tips for Cornell and Kellogg:
