Hi All - bb/Jonaddmissionado/ Manhattanreview/ evryone,

OK, so i will try n be concise and give a clear, honest to heart picture...but to start with, let me thank all you guys in advance, Appreciate ur efforts so so so much :-D .
I gave my GMAT on 14th mar,13 and gt 690(Q48,V37) score. I'll highlight the imp stuff and focus on my strength's and weaknesses.

Background:
born and brought up in New Delhi , India.
Secondary and senior secondary School: xth and xii th standard - 86% and 82%
undergrad - B.tech in computer sciences frm Delhi - 4yrs - first div
Hold a PMP (Project mgmt professional - PMI) , A couple more certification.

For past 3 yrs , have been working in HP singapore(earlier in Ericsson/ HCL tech) as a senior consultant and earning a 100k+ (n hv saved up some money for my MBA :P :P :P ) . I have about 7 yrs of exp, decent international exp.
worked in US/Hongkong/Singapore/India, and can show achievements\ progress made in my career.
Job profile - IT Consulting/ pre sales/ CRM / Project management ...handled big multi million $ project , worked for Singapore govt/ Hongkong Hotel and casino company/ 2 US fortune 500 companies etc.
Also I have worked extensively in multi cultural work env with people from different backgrounds and geographies.

I am v passionate about educating myself, Although I come from a humble background, and money\big office n all that jazz is not my objective for doin an MBA.
I was fortunate enough to work with some great people and they have a strong influence on me, and therefore I would like to make a substantial difference for all the under privileged in my home state. I have a plan and a solid MBA from one of top schools is a step in that plan.

I think I can do good in the interview, have always been a people person, communication is not a problem for me. I plan to major in Strategic planning\Sales\marketing.
Weakness is that my undergrad is NOT from a TOP univ, Its an avg\above avg state univ. Although i have tried to get industry level certifications like PMP \other mgmt certification, to mitigate this.

I am listing down 2 sets of schools ( preference wise), I need ur help in evaluating whether I have a possible chance in getting through and it would be great if u could quantify my chances too.

1st Preference:
MIT Sloan
Chicago-Booth
UC Berkeley
Kellogg
Dartmouth-tuck
Cornell-Johnson
Cambridge-Judge
Oxford - Said
INSEAD

2nd Preference:

Michigan-Ross
UCLA Anderson
Virginia-Darden
Carnegie Mellon
Rice-Jones
UT-Rotman
Ivey
NUS

Hi Rahul,

You have robust profile with decent GMAT score, academics and international work experience. Stick on to strong areas in your profile and then focus more on your application essays, recommendation rather than worrying about GMAT score and academics. Based on your profile I would suggest you to choose 2 dream schools, 2-3 schools where you have realistic chance of getting admit and 2 safe schools. You can try your chances for top b-schools by visiting this tool http://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

You are in right stage of career and most of the top b-schools in your list look for 4-8 years of work experience. You should start planning for your applications soon which will give ample time for comprehensive preparation. However you should also plan and need to cleverly prepare for questions like your objective behind applying for a specific B school, why MBA? etc.

The next step would be to focus more on your applications essays to portray your leadership qualities convincingly to the admission committees of top b-schools.

Please PM your contact details or feel free to post any other query or concern that you might have :)

Regards,
Neha Singh

First of all I want to emphasize that you are in a very competitive demographic group and that there are many more qualified candidates than their are allocated spaces so you have no room for error, especially for the top programs. Also, there are some schools that are more receptive to others in accepting non-IIT candidates so I would really focus on these schools as they really do see the candidate beyond where they went to school. Lastly, I would consider re-taking my GMAT exam as a 690 is a bit on the low side for Indian applicants -- I would much rather have you submit your application with at least a 720.

As it is impossible to tell you where you will be admitted to, I would look at those schools that are more open-minded about their admissions process. Here is a quick assessment of how your background fits in with trends we have noticed.

1st Preference:
MIT Sloan (very competitive and a lot of Indian candidates. I might take a pass on this given your background or realize it is a long-shot. If you want a school that is more open to your candidacy and of this level, I would consider Wharton)
Chicago-Booth (they are very receptive to all types of Indian candidates but need a higher GMAT score to be competitive)
UC Berkeley (very low acceptance rate and very IIT focused)
Kellogg (very open to all Indian candidates especially those with international work experience)
Dartmouth-tuck (very small class and the school really focuses on your undergraduate institution)
Cornell-Johnson (very good choice and very open to Indian candidates from all backgrounds)
Cambridge-Judge (very IIT focused)
Oxford - Said (very IIT focused)
INSEAD (good choice and diverse class)

Hi kimberly,

Thank You so much for an an insightful evaluation.
The +ve fpr me is though that you did not outright reject my profile for the top schools.. believe me, I was not even sure whether I should be even applying to the top ones...
and Yes, i completely agree with every word you said.. We must compare apples with apples and schools look for diversity in geography, line of work etc etc n by GOD, i am competing with the most difficult pool  , wish i was in the Oil industry or better still , a government administrator.
I am still thinking of retaking the GMAT , but I kind of am reaching my burnout with the gmat :x
Just one more question, What do you think of Rotman and Ivey (canada)?
I did not mention another fact though, I am planning to go on an LOA from my company and join back in a business strategy and planning role. Considering this , does it change anything...
Cheers
