Hi Alex,

I wanted to get your thoughts on my profile.

Bachelor in Finance, GPA 3.89 (state school)
GMAT: 640
Age 26, Indian, female (born in the US)

Banking consultant for 3 1/2 years, now working as Senior Accountant at University
Involved in extracurriculars such as Diversity initiatives, Toastmasters, and volunteering

I would ideally like to get into places such as Michigan, Berkeley, Stanford, Booth, Kellogg.

I'm thinking I should try retaking the GMAT before applying...although I read somewhere that if I cannot improve it by 50 points then it won't help. Thoughts?

Merci beaucoup!

You really need at least 680 at a bare minimum - and realistically 700+ to be competitive at the top schools. Even with a 700+, you'd be a stretch for certain schools (Stanford) and a slight stretch to sweet spot (depending on the quality of your applications) at the other schools.

Re-take the GMAT. Do what it takes to boost that score. And if you can't, then apply anyways, but know that your GMAT is going to be a significant handicap. I wish I could tell you otherwise, but that's just the reality.

Thanks for your honest feedback! I appreciate it. I have already decided to retake the GMAT and my goal is to break 700. You mentioned though, that even with such a GMAT score it would be a stretch to get accepted to most of those schools. Is it because of my age or experience - or both? Just wondering what else I can do to try and improve my chances.

You're middle of the road - you'll be competing against a lot of other people of a similar overall caliber, and it'll be easy to get lost in the shuffle. A lot of it comes down to how successful you are at conveying who you are as an individual in the application.

Ahh, I see, I just checked our your website. You're saying based on my stats I'm the "average joe." Guess I'll just have to prove them wrong!

Thanks again for your candid feedback.
