Dear
Admissionado prep,
I have a question on my profile - I'm a 25 year old European with a degree in marketing/management, my GMAT is 680 (45q/38v). Therefore for my target school INSEAD, I'd be below expectations (70th percentile on Q) and below average.
However, during a campus visit at INSEAD, they mentioned that INSEAD does take a candidate's background into consideration - e.g. an Indian Engineer's Quant-expectation would be higher than a European marketeer's.
My questions are:
a) Can you verify this behavior for INSEAD and other schools from your experience?
b) For myself personally, I have a degree in "Marketing and Management". For my not-so-competitive score - could it be of help if I display myself as a marketing undergrad rather than a plain business undergrad? So far I have always just displayed my undergrad degree as "Business Administration". I was scared that if I wrote "Marketing", people would automatically think I'm bad at Finance. Now that my GMAT is out (it's not an option for me to re-take), I feel like I might as well "own" the "marketing"-label and besides emphasizing on the work experiences I have in project finance, I could mention my creativity and put my degree as "Marketing" undergrad - with the thought of possibly receiving thoughts like "hey, he studied marketing, so then his quant score isn't that bad after all" - Any thoughts/comments on this thinking - is it plain dumb or do I may have a point?
Thanks a lot!
Christian
Dear Christian,
So first of all, a 680 is a totally fine score for INSEAD if your profile is good. Their average sure is about 700-710, but INSEAD is very flexible in regards to GMAT scroe. So a 680 will by no means "kill" your app.
The main question then is: What have you done in and out of work? Don't worry about labels - nobody cares. You could be an athlete like an artist like a marketing guy. As long as you are GOOD at what you. And that is one of your primary missions. To SHOW that you are.
