Project Analyst or Team Leader Operations ? [#permalink] New post 12 Jul 2013, 10:18
Hi

I am an Indian working as an IT System Analyst with 4 yrs of work ex .
I have two job offers with me , one as a Project Analyst and the other as Team Leader Operations .

The Project Analyst will work in the Project Management dept of the IT division and work along the Project Manager in implementing the IT projects . These projects will follow the waterfall model of SDLC .

The Team Leader Operations will lead a small team which will work extensively on the User Acceptance Testing of Software Implementations .

The Project Analyst will not lead a team , but will have much more exposure in Managing the projects from the initiating to closing phase , while the Team Leader operations will lead a team but will only work in Quality and the project closing sections .

Now i am confused , and not sure which one to join .

I intend to do my MBA in General Management and Strategy . I am not sure which profile will help me out more . Can anyone help me out on this ... ?

Thanks!

Hi there,

First and foremost, I encourage you to focus on what your long-term career goals are, and then assess which job will best assist you to getting to that point and help you to gain additional skills and experiences that you will utilize in the future. This should be your top consideration, vs which will help you get into b-school, because that will lead you to choose the option that makes the most sense for you, and ultimately be more genuine.

To delve deeper, on the surface it sounds as though the Team Leader option would provide key leadership experiences that are important for managers and to admission to some b-schools. But I would carefully consider my paragraph above too! Good luck to you! ;)

Thanks for such a quick response . The Team Lead position is in the IT Operations Dept , while the Project Analyst is in the IT Software Development Dept , I thought that maybe the profile of Software development is better than the Operations . Do let me know your thoughts .

Thanks!

Hi,

Between those two areas, IT operations vs software development, there really wouldn't be a 'preferred' background in an applicant. But whatever you choose, again, do so for your personal preferences and long-term goals, and 'own it' so to speak when you apply.. explain confidently your rationale for your choices past, present and future in your application. Good luck to you!
