The weight of a glass jar is 20% of the weight of the jar filled with coffee beans. After some of the beans have been removed, the weight of the jar and the remaining beans is 60% of the original total weight. What fractional part of the beans remain in the jar?

j = weight of empty jar
b = weight of beans
A = weight of jar full of beans

A = j + b
A = j + 4j .... we're told weight of jar is 20% that of when it's full so b = 4j or 80% of the weight
A = 5j

After emptying some 60% left:

A = j + b
5j = j + b .... from above calculation
3j = j + b .... simply take 60% of 5
2j = b

This tells us half as many beans are left in the jar after emptying a little.

Pick a number
100 = total weight of jar when filled with beans
Therefore, 20 = empty, 80 = weight of beans.

after beans removed = 60; therefore 40 is the weight of beans removed thus only half of the beans + plus the tare weight of the jar remains.

My method was same as titleist.. so 1/2 is correct...hope so.
coz answer to this question is also not given.

Total weight = weight of coffee jar = 100
Weight of glass jar = 20
Weight of the coffee beans = 80... (100-20)...............(a)
Original total weight = 100
New weight = 60% * 100 = 60
New weight of the beans = 40 ( 60-20).............(b)
Fraction =40/80 =1/2

G = 0.2( G + C )
After some beans were removed C1 beans remained
so
G+C1 = 0.6(G+C)
C1 = 0.6(G+C) - G = 0.6(G+C) - 0.2(G+C) = 0.4(G+C)
so
C1/(G+C) = 0.4 = 2/5 ( I think this is what Geethu did )

But the question is asking C1/C
Since C = 4G
C1/C = 0.4 * 5 / 4 = 1/2
