gasoline required for driving 10 miles in the city = (1/25)* 10
gasoline required for driving 50 miles on highway = (1/40)* 50
gasoline required for 60 miles driving = (1/25)* 10 + (1/40)* 50 = 165/100

mileage = 165/(100 *60) = 36

V(city) = Vc = 25 mpg = 1/25 gallon per mile
V(highway) = Vh = 40 mpg = 1/40 gallon per mile

Car is driven 10 miles in the city.
10 mile x 1/25 gallon per mile = 10/25 = 2/5 gallon {Car uses gas 2/5 gallon to go 10 miles in the city}

Car is driven 50 miles on the highway
50 mile x 1/40 gallon per mile = 50/40 = 5/4 gallon {Car uses gas 5/4 gallon to go 50 mile on the highway}

V(average) = Total mileage/ total gas used
V(average) = 60 / (2/5 + 5/4) = 60 x 20/33 = 400/11 = 36.3636...
