On the number line, if x is halfway between -5 and 3, and if y is halfway between -2 and 6, what number is halfway between x and y ?
(A) -1
(B) -1/2
(C) 0
(D) 1/2
(E) 1

x = (-5 + 3)/2 = -1
y = (-2 + 6 )/2 = 2

The number b/w x and y = (x + y )/2 = ( -1 + 2 )/2 = 1/2
