Hi Guys ,

I came across the following question in SET 31 and couldnt solve it. Any guidance will be appreaciated.

Q-1 John, Karen and Luke collected cans of vegetable of a food drive. The number of cans that John collected was 1/2 the number of cans that Karen collected and 1/3 the number of cans that Luke collected. The number of cans that Luke collected was what fraction of the total number of cans that John, Karen and Luke collected?

(A) 1/5
(B) 1/3
(C) 2/5
(D) 1/2
(E) 2/3

I tried solving it but wasnt able to.

If anyone can give solution with explanation it will be nice.

Thanks...

Important part is to solve "The number of cans that John collected was 1/2 the number of cans that Karen collected and 1/3 the number of cans that Luke collected."

Says John Collected x number of cans.
Then Karen collected = 2*x = 2x cans (as John collected 1/2nd the number of cans that Karen collected)
Then Luke collected = 3*x = 3x cans (as John collected 1/3rd the number of cans that Luke collected)

So total number of cans (John's + Karen's + Luke's) = x + 2x + 3x = 6x

Now the easy part, which is asking us "The number of cans that Luke collected was what fraction of the total number of cans that John, Karen and Luke collected" or re-phrased ratio of can collected by Luke to total cans.

So Ratio = 3x/6x = 1/2
